National Intelligence Director Dennis Blair told Congress Tuesday that China has adopted a more aggressive military posture, according to Reuters, after the Pentagon accused five Chinese ships of harassing an unarmed U.S. Navy craft in international waters.
The top intelligence official said the incident is the worst since a U.S. spy plane and crew were detained in 2001.
In the incident Sunday, Chinese ships surrounded and harassed a Navy mapping ship in international waters off China, at one point coming within 25 feet of the American boat and strewing debris in its path, the Defense Department said. The Obama administration said it would continue naval operations in the South China Sea, most of which China considers its territory, and protested to China about what it called reckless behavior that endangered lives.
At one point during the incident the unarmed USNS Impeccable turned fire hoses on an approaching Chinese ship in self defense, the Pentagon said. At another point a Chinese ship played chicken with the Americans, stopping dead in front of the Impeccable as it tried to sail away, forcing the civilian mariners to slam on the brakes.
In the hearing on international threats before the Senate Armed Services Committee Tuesday, Defense Intelligence Agency Director Lt. Gen. Michael Maples also said the Somali extremist group al-Shabaab is poised to formally merge with Al Qaeda, expanding the terrorist franchise in East Africa.

Reagan gave us ‘peace through strength’. Obama will give us ‘war through weakness’. Genuflecting to the Russians, Hamas, Iran and Taliban...China wants in on the action too.
These guys know that Obama is a weakling. Time to poke and prod and see just how much of a weakling he is.
And N Korea, Iran, Russia and Venezuela will be poking us next.
All Naval vessels should be armed.
And why hasn’t this been plastered all over the alphabet so-called news broadcasts?
Yes, it is a rhetorical question.
OK,. I have to ask. Does anyone remember a movie back in the 80’s called “The Subversion Factor”? I believe that had something to do with China’s intent to win America through subversion! Wish I could remember more. I think were in big trouble!
Not surprising at all. It is always the case that the weak are taken advantage of. It isn’t that we don’t have the power, which we do, it is that we have not the resolve. We are not going to have the leadership to back them down, so they will back us down. They have us dependent on them for all of our manufacturing, which we pay them for with debt. It is a logical step for them to forclose on us for some of our debt to them, if we have anything at all that they want. I’m sure that they look at Obama and include him in all their calculations, as well as the resolve of a country that would select a pacifist for its leader. They are going to come asking for things, and we will have little choice under the present circumstances but to acquiesce.
(shaking head in disgust)
Inside of this year, China will assert dominion over Taiwan. Just watch and see. And since China holds the mortgage on the US, we will say a lot but do nothing.
The powers that be didn’t want someone who would stand up to China, like Duncan Hunter. Well, they got their wish. We’ve been through this with 3 or 4 election cycles. Conservatism is dead and I think I’ll just go with it. This country isn’t interested in electing leaders, it’s interested in American Idol.
I will thank God every day I got to be a part of the great American experiment. And I will curse the people every day who killed it.
It ain’t over yet. We’ll reclaim this country, one way or another.
This is more akin to anti-whalers from the US harassing Japanese whaling ships.
Of course, there will always be those who see it as an act of war. I'm just glad and praise God that their fingers aren't on the button.
I wonder how many God fearing Christians in China realize that there are some hard core Americans itching for military engagement with their country. And that God's hand is protecting the Chinese people.
I wonder how many God fearing Americans realize that the People’s Army is full of people doing all they can to destroy America and we have a panty waist commie as CIC.
Hard to say who has a greater point. I will say this, it is the hard core American's (the Duncan Hunter types) who have a hard spot with China's increased modernization and not the other way around.
Chicom apologist. Thats really what you are. Your claims to being American are just as hollow as your words.
You bet we do. Chicoms are evil.
You doubt my patriotism? But would you doubt Pat Buchanan's patriotism when he vehemently opposed US engagement in Yugoslavia?
Yugoslavia is not and has never been China. Don’t make silly extrapolations. You are a Chicom trash and that’s really that.
Well, actually, you are right. China is a stable country whereas Yugoslavia collapsed into several countries. Western companies will continue to pour money into China because of it's stable business environment and there isn't a danger of the country fragmenting.
Yugoslavia tried to import cars into the US and till this day is an icon of poor quality. China, despite the many criticism of an auto crash test in Germany, will assuredly flood Western markets with reliable vehicles sometime during the next decade the same way the Japanese did back in the 80's. Except, it'll be done with significant Western involvement because of China's stable political and economic environment.
I realize that's not what you meant when you said "Yugoslavia is not China", but that's how I can agree with your statement.
And it is true, people with the same thinking as Pat Buchanan, wouldn't brand him as unpatriotic when he ties to alleviate any misunderstanding between the US and Russia and try to direct a unified front towards China. I don't see how my goal, i.e., alleviate misunderstanding between the US and China and directing a unified front towards Russia, is any different or less patriotic. Just a different twist to Pat's direction. That's what Nixon was trying to do when he visited China, and I don't see a problem with continuing his legacy.
You are a Chicom trash and thats really that.
I usually take those comments as a person unable to make a logical argument.
