Studies Find Contraception Makes Women Obese and Newborns Too Thin

By Thaddeus M. Baklinski

OTTAWA, March 9, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - University of Ottawa researchers have found that women who conceive within a month of taking birth-control pills tend to have premature babies or babies with a low birth weight. At the same time, another study from the University of Texas has revealed that users of the contraceptive "shot" are significantly more likely than other women to become obese.

Xi-Kuan Chen, an epidemiologist and senior analyst with the Canadian Institute for Health Information at the University of Ottawa said doctors should inform patients of the link between chemical contraceptives and low birth weight, which is a growing problem in Canada, because children born too thin are likely to suffer health problems later in life.

"Doctors should be bringing this to the attention of patients," said Dr. Chen in a National Post report. "When they consult with some patients, they should suggest there might be some effect for them."

The study used the singularly comprehensive database of the Saskatchewan drug and medicare plans to look at 1,500 women, divided into three groups, who had taken contraceptive drugs within 30 days, 31-60 days and 61-90 days of their last period before becoming pregnant. They then compared the birth weight of their children with 6,100 women who had not used birth-control pills for at least a year before they gave birth.

Analysis of the data showed that women who had taken the pill within 30 days of getting pregnant were more than three times as likely to have a very low-weight newborn (under 3.3 lbs) and twice as likely to have a child born weighing less than 5.5 pounds or to deliver the child six weeks prematurely.

The report also showed that the longer the abstention from contraceptive drugs before conceiving, the closer the newborns birth weight would be to those women who had not used birth-control pills.

Dr. Chen said that although the study does not definitively prove a cause-and-effect relationship and needs to be confirmed by more research because it did not take into account factors such as smoking, which also contribute to low birth weight and prematurity, the results of the study should not be ignored.

At the same time as the findings of Dr. Chen's study are being reported, Dr. Abbey Berenson at the University of Texas Medical Branch has revealed that the use of certain contraceptive drugs causes significant weight gain and an increase in body fat, according to a study published in the current issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Dr. Berenson and her team of researchers studied the use of the contraceptive drug depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), commercially known as Depo-Provera, which is delivered in the form of a shot, and found that DMPA users were more than twice as likely to become obese as women who did not use that contraceptive drug.

"Women and their doctors should factor in this new data when choosing the most appropriate birth control method," said Berenson.

"One concern is DMPA's link to increased abdominal fat, a known component of metabolic syndrome, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes."

Wow, imagine that... Who would have thought that messing with womens hormones so she could attempt to prevent the consequences of unfettered sex and be punished with a baby would have unintended consequences??

It sure is a good thing they can have an abortion because now women won’t want to take birth control. It might make them fat and they just couldn’t live with that.

Unfortunately, sarcasm tag is off because it is predictably true. These kinds of studies will cause a major uptick in abortion as women abandon birth control to control their weight, much as an anti smoking campaign a while back pointed out that women would rather smoke than eat right to maintain their weight.

The Depo shot DOES make women hold on to every calorie, because the brain thinks the body is pregnant.

I foolishly tried it when it first was approved and packed on 15 lbs. within the 1st month of getting the shot-with no change in my then usual exercise or eating habits. I didn’t bother with a second shot. Those 15 lbs. were a bear to shed, it seemed different than just plain ol’ weight gain.

I have a family member who used the Depo shot for years and now the once slender, cute newlywed is carting around an extra 80 lbs. She’s also had a host of fertility problems for years after quitting it-probably due in part to the weight gain-caused from monkeying around with her hormones.
In both cases our health care ‘professionals’ insisted the drug DID not cause weight gain...but to me it seemed like a no-brainer!

I find it intensely creepy that the government has this information available.

I took two rounds of Depo shots to try and cure some pain my doctors originally thought was related to ovulation. Both my doctor and her nurse warned me about weight gain during our discussions about possible treatments — they told me (this was about 1 1/2 years ago) that most women on the shot will definitely gain between 5-15 pounds (obviously some will gain more, and some less). I think you’re right that while the shot tricks the body into not ovulating and such it starts taking in the extra calories, but there’s no baby to “feed” so it just goes into storage...

As for me — I’m not on the Depo shot anymore (was off that after 6 mos.), but due to 2 of my other medications I’ve put on a TON of weight (used to be 125-130, but have gained like 50 pounds now in the last few years). Very depressing, and VERY hard to get rid of. Like you it’s not like my diet has changed - just my metabolism being affected by my medications, and of course I’m over 35 now so that doesn’t help either! LOL

Losing the weight don’t get any easier with age, that’s for sure! Add our current stress levels to the mix (which causes weight gain, too.) and all us FReepers will be a mess! Sorry to hear about your trouble from this junk.

It was over 15 or so years ago when I tried it, and at that time they were really denying the weight gain thing. Nice to see that they are finally admitting it.
My hubby joked at the time that the stuff worked because of the weight it added to your body! Made you sexually unattractive.
Needless to say, at the time with my hormones in a chemically induced uproar, I didn’t see the humor in that!
(He’s lucky he survived the experiment! LOL)

“I find it intensely creepy that the government has this information available.”

It’s Canada. But I’m betting we have all manner of stats concerning reproductive habits of the citizens as well, thanks to Medicaid.(Socialized medicine, lite. They are very intrusive!)

I’m finding government intensely creepy now, period.
; )
