(Vanity) Ever been hit by shotgun ricochet?

Posted on 03/08/2009 8:51:32 PM PDT by sheepishshooter

So, I'm too embarrassed to post this under my usual name, so I'm using this name. I was out trying to shoot gopher today...I know, it's stupid, but I'm so fed up, and I saw one of those little b@stards starting to poke through. I grabbed the shortbarrel shotgun and went to get it, but while creeping up on it, I hit the tigger. The spray didn't hit me directly, but it shot at the big rock I was standing on, and ricocheted back and hit my ankle. Stung pretty badly. I walked back to the house and sure enough there are two round bleeding wounds on my ankle. I felt around but can't find any shot anywhere. I don't know if it was the pellets that hit me, or some bits of granite off the rock. My ankle feels okay...still stings, and and hour and a half later.

Just thought I would get some freeper advice. Should I be concerned about this or just clean it up and ignore it? Thanks!

Made Nice Round Holes,,,Is That Rotting Flesh I See?

I think so! In fact, that may lead to a blood infection, so I'd suggest protecting the brain from any problem and immediate application of a tourniquet around the neck.

You know, just in case the leg amputation didn't catch the problem in time! Better safe than sorry!

if he has problems with a shotgun, a claymore might be a bit much, don’t you think?

Nah. The claymore has the instructions printed on it. ("this side toward enemy").

I do believe that in several states *any* gun accident must be reported and investigated by the police.

Not just guns but knives. I laid my finger open one night while fixing a sandwich, and drove from the oil rig where I was working to the nearest hospital where I knew the ER would be open to get it sewed up. The hospital just happened to be across the state line. The doctor told me he had to notify the police. "For a kitchen accident?" I asked, to which he replied, "For a knife wound."

When the Sherrif's deputy arrived he sat down and with full Joe Friday sternness asked me "Okay, what happened?"

I told him, as seriously as I could, "The roast beef won."

That is the funniest thing I’ve heard all day! lol!

My son had a similar argument with a carrot about a year ago. Thank G-d we live in Texas. Instead of calling CPS, the doc just stitched him up.

The expression on both his and the doctor's (who knew what happened) were priceless. The deputy gave me one of those WTF? looks and I told him "I'm sitting here, still hungry, getting stitches and the roast is back in the fridge, unmolested. I'd say it won." After that he just shook his head and started grinning...

It sure would save a lot of time if the physicians were permitted to use more discretion, but at least he had something to tell them back at the office.

That’s what I was thinking. A .22 or even a BB/pellet gun is sufficient. Hell, my 76 yr old uncle uses a bullwhip on snakes and varmints like this.

Hey, the guy was climbing around on a rock with his finger on the trigger.
So he’s not the brightest bulb out there to begin with.

Rule # 1: Do not put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot the gun.

Happens all the time in competitive shooting events when you fire at metallic so called reactive targets that usually flop over when hit. Shooting at these dense, heavy targets sometimes causes what is known as splash! Which is the bounce back of fragments from the projectiles, or shot. I've seen the stuff draw blood but rarely does it require medical attention beyond the capability of range safety officers like myself. That's why everyone in the line of sight to the firing points are required to wear safety glasses and ear protection when rounds are going downrange, in case the splash travels further than those assembled at the firing point waiting their turn to shoot.

I know you're getting a chunk of helpful advice, so I hope this won't add to your burdens:

It's easier to stick with a positive rule than a negative one.

Negative: "Keep yo' finger off the trigger until you mean to shoot."
Positive: "Lay yo' trigger finger along the frame of the weapon above the trigger guard."

I think you got shot because you were trying NOT to do something.

YMMV.

Yep... I’ve been peppered by bird shot as well while dove hunting. It sounded like a herd of bees coming at me so turned my back to it and the shot bounced off. Distance it was shot from was about 50 yards.

You are incorrect. Lead is still the primary shot shell projectile.
