Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president has facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told.
Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.
British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a formal dinner, as has been customary. They concede that Obama aides seemed unfamiliar with the expectations that surround a major visit by a British prime minister.
But Washington figures with access to Mr Obama's inner circle explained the slight by saying that those high up in the administration have had little time to deal with international matters, let alone the diplomatic niceties of the special relationship.
Allies of Mr Obama say his weary appearance in the Oval Office with Mr Brown illustrates the strain he is now under, and the president's surprise at the sheer volume of business that crosses his desk.
A well-connected Washington figure, who is close to members of Mr Obama's inner circle, expressed concern that Mr Obama had failed so far to "even fake an interest in foreign policy".
A British official conceded that the furore surrounding the apparent snub to Mr Brown had come as a shock to the White House. "I think it's right to say that their focus is elsewhere, on domestic affairs. A number of our US interlocutors said they couldn't quite understand the British concerns and didn't get what that was all about."

Another good one I read here a few weeks ago:
Jimmy Carter on speed.
Can anyone imagine Pres Bush acting like this? If 0bambi couldn’t handle this guy who wanted a photo. How can he handle our foes? Apparently the man had previously approached Obama while he was speaking to several children. When the man surfaced at the Italian Market for another try, Obama walked away. The man nudged his way to Obama again, after the senator walked out of a shop. “Senator can I get a picture with you?” Slightly annoyed, Obama responded, “You are wearing me out, brother.” http://blog.washingtonpost.com/44/2008/04/02/persistent_pictureseeker_irks.html#more
Yeah, and then we have Biden...
God save America.
My husband is a physician who trains medical residents from institutions from across the US and the world. He has not been impressed with any from Harvard. They are more likely to have an air of entitlement and cockiness about them and they seem neither inclined to, nor want to, work hard.
As a mayor of my home-town.....and since our opponents seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves: I guess, a small town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except.....that you have actual responsibilities.
PERFECT!
One of the points that is being missed here is that Brown was looking for the political boost that a warm reception by Obama would bring. There are mutterings for election over there, and it looks bad for Labour. Obama’s slapdown will no doubt help the Conservative Party to regain control of England.
Obumble has shot himself in the foot.
I don't think President Bush 2 or Ronald Reagan ever needed an excuse for "exhaustion" and they had the entire media and every liberal wacko attacking them every day for 2 terms...
Who exactly is tuckering you out Obama? Rush?
I understand..but in all honesty, could biden do any worse??
Mr. Hopey Change, new tone indeed.
I’ll see your “Hell, I miss Bill Clinton” and raise you “Hell, I miss Jimmy Carter.”
By the way. Per Gibbs - He left to Camp David on Saturday and to return on Sunday. Big speach on Tues.
I have my suspicions who that “source close to the White House” may be. I recall reading an article about 2 months ago that many suspected that Rahm Emanuel was the one who was leaking the going on inside the White House during the Clinton Administration. Well Rahm is back in again and closer, and that makes me go hmmmmmmm...could he be the source?
I guess we will never know.
I actually began really feeling that a couple days ago. Do we get cigars or what? I'm buying the first round of Big Macs.
Let me be the first to start the "I think I might actually have liked Carter better" club.
Sounds to me like the idiot in chief usurper needs to buckle down and actually GET some real work done instead of complaining about it. But then again, this is the first entry level 8-5 job this bozo has ever had, as usurper president of the U.S. and now he's complaining about how much work it is??? Frikkin lazy whiny b@$t@rd!!!
Oh poor Mr. Soetoro.
I think he should just quit his job and take a vacation.
“Allies of Mr Obama say his weary appearance in the Oval Office with Mr Brown illustrates the strain he is now under, and the president’s surprise at the sheer volume of business that crosses his desk.”
I guess that the anti-Christ Obama just isn’t up to the job.
