I did a title search and didn't see this posted. If it's a duplicate, I apologize..

I don't think this is going to happen, but it shows the dems are more than willing to shoot themselves in the foot..we ought to allow that to happen, matter of fact, I'll hand them the gun..

‘Whether they want it or not, they are going to get it,’’ Oberstar (D-Minn)

And that, folks, sums up exactly the attitude of the would-be Lords in Congress.

GTH Oberstar.

I will go to prison before I pay their damned mileage tax. At least my room and board and taxes will be paid for!

“While she says a mileage tax ‘’is the way to go,’’ she said she wanted to scrap the technology and rely on an honor system in which drivers would simply certify the number of miles they drove each year.”

On my honor, I swear I only drove 8 miles last year. What a collection of idiots these Dems are.

Our overlords know what’s better for us.

This is one of those issues that the states need to exert their 10th amendment rights on, and simply defy.

Paying taxes by miles driven versus taxing by volume consumed is yet another Democrat scheme to penalize the prudent to reward the self centered idiots who support the Democrats. This measure certainly does not encourage conservation.

It only took 3 weeks for Step 1 of the plan I laid out to be proposed...

This invidious plan will come back again and again. It's already been introduced in the legislatures of several states. I think it will unfold like this after it finally passes:

  1. You will enter the number of miles you drove last year on your tax return and calculate the tax you owe. This is a trust system, subject to audit.
  2. People will massively under-report their annual mileage. Congress will pass a law that you require an annual "mileage report" from a certified inspection station that will read your odometer.
  3. Inspection stations are crooked and subject to kickbacks. Drivers disconnect their odometers to stop counting miles. People are still underreporting mileage and cheating government out of its "fair share" of your income.
  4. Congress will pass a law requiring all new cars to have GPS devices. There will be tough language in the law to make sure that the GPS is only used to track actual miles driven and that it cannot be disconnected or interrupted. Reporting is still done by the certified inspection stations which are still crooked.
  5. Congress amends their law and requires automatic radio communication from your GPS to a government database tracking the miles you drive. There are still strict controls to make sure the government doesn't know where you are driving, only the number of miles you drove.
  6. Back in '09, the Obama administration passed the law letting each state make up its own automobile regulations. U.S. automobile models are now sold in 30 different state-specific flavors. And, in violation of the interstate commerce clause, most states do not not allow non-complying cars from any other state to cross their borders.
  7. The states begin using the onboard GPS to make sure that illegal cars from other states are not crossing their borders via small two-lane backroads. When they do enter a state illegally, the Highway Patrols and State Police (actually, by that time, there are no longer any Highway Patrols because all law enforcement is now STATE POLICE) track down the invaders and repel them (unless, of course, you are entering from Mexico, in which case you get a Get-Out-of-Jail-Free card).
  8. In the second Obama administration, by 2015, you need internal travel papers within your state to travel from your home to the adjacent county. Travel is strictly controlled by the onboard GPS which is now programmed to control your engine output and shut it off if you travel too many miles beyond your home. The travel restrictions were the result of Iran sinking several VLCCs in the straits of Hormuz back in 2012, sending the price of gasoline past $20/gallon.
  9. In 2016, Iran and Nork simultaneously explode nukes 180 miles above the U.S., one in the east and one in the west, destroying most electronic devices including all the automobile GPS systems. You are now free to drive wherever and whenever you like again, no longer tethered by Big Brother.

Wow, a new way to tax us and a new way to completely cripple commerse and business. Who will be able to afford to commute here and drive there, especially if you have a long drive to work? The people who thought of this idea should be thrown in prison.

Those selfish Prius owners are not paying their fair share of the gasoline taxes. A mileage tax will make sure that the Prius owners pay their fair share of taxes and not just the SUV owners.

After they pass the mileage tax, they will need to figure out how to apply it to all those selfish tax cheats who use public transportation.

Next will come the "coach potato" tax. You should not be permitted to avoid paying your fair share of taxes simply by staying home and never going anywhere.

Next they will enact a CO2 production tax. Inhaling will be continue to be tax free (at least for now), but if you expect to continue exhaling carbon dioxide into the atmosphere then you will need to pay a carbon tax based upon the volume of air that you breathe each day.

LOL I guess they really want to put the transportation, shipping and tourism industries out to pasture. There will be a full scale revolt on Washington before this ever happens.

Both the feds and the states are going to find ways to increase the gasoline tax. Mileage is one method and would fairly easy to calculate on a passenger vehicle that requires an annual state inspection. The inspection station would record your odometer reading each inspection year you would be charged based upon the mileage shown. There would be flaws to this system but it could be groundwork system to begin this taxation.

Everyone remember the “Sea of Red” map?

AS much as anything, this is a tax on the extended suburbanite and the rural. Those who chose not to live in the liberal bastions in the big city. Those who get up at 4:00 and drive 1:00 to be at work by 6:00 or 6:30.

By and large, this tax directly effects working men and women more than anyone else.

Want to take a long vacation and drive across the US, seeing the sights, and driving because it is much cheaper than flying? Add several hundred dollars to that trip.

Want to buy a fuel miser to save money? Not so efficient, now.

Stupidity on a grand scale.

Yep, this is going to help lower income and distressed Americans get back on their feet!

The question is when they do get to their feet, will they be armed?
