WASHINGTON -- Despite opposition from the White House, a proposal to tax motorists on the number of miles they drive each year is gathering speed on Capitol Hill.
Its popularity is increasing as Congress searches for alternatives to the federal gasoline tax, which is not indexed to inflation and has not been raised since 1993.

''Whether they want it or not, they are going to get it,'' Oberstar (D-Minn) said in a speech to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

I’m aware of how many times it’s been posted in the past few weeks. HOWEVER, after ears shot it down, this is a renewed effort to implement it anyway..
After they pass the mileage tax, they will need to figure out how to apply it to all those selfish tax cheats who use public transportation.
Next will come the "coach potato" tax. You should not be permitted to avoid paying your fair share of taxes simply by staying home and never going anywhere.
Next they will enact a CO2 production tax. Inhaling will be continue to be tax free (at least for now), but if you expect to continue exhaling carbon dioxide into the atmosphere then you will need to pay a carbon tax based upon the volume of air that you breathe each day.
It was a joke, kiddo...
PS: the ‘fairtaxers’ should be all for this - it’s what they want for your income tax...
heh...kiddo?? I haven’t been called that in years..:)
btw, my ex-wife has many names for me, some of which are even socially acceptable..:)
I’m totally opposed to this, but it will be lots of fun to tamper with the technology. :-)
One big advantage to the gas tax is the money is collected up front at the point of sale.
I drove 7.
I drove everywhere in Reverse - hey owe me now.
didn’t you hear the fine for driving in reverse is 3x higher than the mileage tax for driving forward? /s
LOL I guess they really want to put the transportation, shipping and tourism industries out to pasture. There will be a full scale revolt on Washington before this ever happens.
Like I said, as long as the dems are willing to shoot themselves in the foot, I'm willin to feed them the ammo..
Both the feds and the states are going to find ways to increase the gasoline tax. Mileage is one method and would fairly easy to calculate on a passenger vehicle that requires an annual state inspection. The inspection station would record your odometer reading each inspection year you would be charged based upon the mileage shown. There would be flaws to this system but it could be groundwork system to begin this taxation.
You notice that employers have the responsibility to withhold income taxes from employees’ paychecks, right. They will simply raise the gasoline tax because it’s much easier to collect.
You don’t understand the game, do you? The federal government collects money from all citizens and then can use the money collected to hold over the head of the states. Money = Power and the federal government has it!
you drove?
Everyone remember the “Sea of Red” map?
AS much as anything, this is a tax on the extended suburbanite and the rural. Those who chose not to live in the liberal bastions in the big city. Those who get up at 4:00 and drive 1:00 to be at work by 6:00 or 6:30.
By and large, this tax directly effects working men and women more than anyone else.
Want to take a long vacation and drive across the US, seeing the sights, and driving because it is much cheaper than flying? Add several hundred dollars to that trip.
Want to buy a fuel miser to save money? Not so efficient, now.
Stupidity on a grand scale.
The question is when they do get to their feet, will they be armed?
“Whether they want it or not, they are going to get it,”
Spoken like a true tyrant!
exactly..people find ways around this debacle, quit taking summer vacations, tax revenues fall below projections, and ANOTHER tax (somewhere) is implemented to make up the difference..
Herr Obersturmfuhrer (D-Third Reich)
Ja wohl!
Keep in mind, you oberstuffed fascist, YOU work for US! With any justice, whether you want it or not, next election you'll be unemployed.
