Up in the air (where it generally stays anyway) went the New York Times' snooty nose. Those conservatives, clucked the Times - railing the way they do against the Obama administration's lurch toward "socialism"! And calling the president "Comrade Obama"! What - so went the strongly implied question - do we do with such folk?
How about, for starters, listen to them? They might be less wacko than the Times often considers people who disagree with the Times.
"Socialism," tightly defined, is outright government ownership. It is not, strictly speaking, socialistic to propose that government take over health care policy, redistribute income, prod the automobile industry to make particular kinds of products, and impose a carbon cap-and-trade regime to combat a problem - global warming - that few voters seem to worry about.
What, then, do we make of the budget that our fearless leader dropped on our heads the other day, with its announced deficit of $1.75 trillion? I'll tell you the bad news, then I'll tell you the good.
Our leader wants the country to be run by its national government. "Run by" isn't the same as "owned by." The latter is inessential. A pliant Democratic Congress needs only direct the federal bureaucracy to direct states and private companies to act in particular ways - to do particular things, to spend their money in particular ways. Theoretically the Constitution restricts government to the performance of particular duties. Alas, no one pays attention to the Constitution anymore, thanks mostly to the permissive U.S. Supreme Courts of past decades.
We approach, under Obama-ism, centralization of a sort unattempted here since, under infinitely grimmer economic circumstances, the first New Deal.
Thomas Jefferson foresaw something of the sort. He warned, in 1821 that "When government ...

What is it, in a few words, that all Republicans believe? We believe - along with millions of Democrats and Independents - that a government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.

"The Communist Party USA views the 2008 elections as a tremendous opportunity to defeat the policies of the right-wing Republicans and to move our country in a new progressive direction.
The record turnout in the Democratic Presidential primary races shows that millions of voters, including millions of new voters, are using this election to bring about real change. We wholeheartedly agree with them."

A Landslide Mandate For Change
Congratulations on an extraordinary history making election!
We can think back with pride to decades of hard work toward our strategic goal of a big enough, broad enough and united enough labor and all-peoples movement that could overcome the ultra-right blockage to all progress. That all peoples movement has come to life, it is dynamic and it has the potential to keep growing.
The election of Barack Obama and a strengthened Congress creates new conditions in our country. There is now the possibility to shift gears and move forward. This new day requires us to further develop our tactics in order to continue to deepen and broaden labor and peoples unity.
There are thousands of experiences that we all have had in these momentous days, some large, some small, all of which express the enormity of change in thinking and readiness for involvement that is underway and that steels us for the battles ahead.
The tears of joy we all shared as crowds gathered to watch the election results here and throughout the world dramatize the new moment we are in.

Saul Alinsky on "Change"...
From Rules for Radicals, Alinsky outlines his strategy in organizing, writing:
"There's another reason for working inside the system. Dostoevsky said that taking a new step is what people fear most. Any revolutionary change must be preceded by a passive, affirmative, non-challenging attitude toward change among the mass of our people. They must feel so frustrated, so defeated, so lost, so futureless in the prevailing system that they are willing to let go of the past and change the future. This acceptance is the reformation essential to any revolution."

Of course strictly speaking, Obama’s policies are neither socialist nor communist: they are fascist.
Even the left finally noticed that the imperatives of the market cannot be abolished—the Chicoms and the Vietnamese have abandoned communism for fascism; Labour in Britain became ‘New Labour’ under Blair who remarked “We’re all Thatcherites now.” The only live species of authoritarianism is fascism, and that, not socialism is where Obama is heading.
As Jonah Goldberg has masterfully documented, fascism was a leftist movement. The only reason it was declared ‘right wing’ was that ‘left’ came to mean supporting the Comintern, ‘right’ was anything opposing it.

Sure, shorn.
Ah, just you wait, now that the wolves have taken control of government, this isn’t anything yet! The true fleecing has not even begun. [/cynic]
Baaaaaaraaaaaak Obaaaaaamaaaaaaa
Democrats/Liberals/Socialists/Comunists/Dictators...all believe that the *government* owns the people.
And constantly work to make sure that the people believe it too.
Yessiree! “The gubbamint will take care of all your needs and responsibilities!”, “We know whats best for you!”
Until they have you, all cowed and unarmed, incapable of defending yourselves, and then, when you become a liability, they will consider you what you let yourself become...expendable.
It’s all about the Ice Cream — a fable The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade in 2000. The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.
To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot.
The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivias mother. The day arrived when they were to make their speeches Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best. Everyone applauded.
He sat down and Olivia came to the podium. Her speech was concise. She said, If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream. She sat down. The class went wild. Yes! Yes! We want ice cream.
She surely would say more. She did not have to. A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasnt sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it? She didnt know. The class really didnt care. All they were thinking about was ice cream. Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a land slide.
Every time Barack Obama opens his mouth he offers ice cream, and fifty percent of America reacts like nine-year-olds. They want ice cream. The other fifty percent know theyre going to have to feed the cow.
They like it when we push back.
Good article!! He nailed it!
The other assumption is that the followers of Alinski believe that those of us who know better will not fight back...
We just do not have the people we elect that are in polace now that have the guts to do it...
We probably have one more chance to fix this...After November 2010, when we can regain some seats, if we do not make a big enough statement, 2012 will come back and bite us...2012 regardless of that outcome, will be a mandate for a change we cannot survive...
