Newt Gingrich Eyes 2012 Run

Susan Davis reports on politics.

Newt Gingrich is keeping an eye towards 2012, the former speaker of the House told reporters Thursday evening before a speaking engagement at Randolph Macon College.

Gingrich said he and his wife, Callista, “will look seriously and we’ll probably get our family totally engaged, including our two grandchildren, probably in January 2011, and we’ll look seriously at whether or not we think it’s necessary to do it,” he said, according to the Richmond Times Dispatch.

“And if we think it’s necessary we’ll probably do it. And if it isn’t necessary we probably won’t do it,” he said.

At the Feb. 28 annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., Gingrich garnered 10% in a straw poll of potential 2012 candidates. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won—for the third straight year—with 20%, followed by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal with 14%, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin—both of which received 13%.

“Just what we need, another big-government Republican muddying the waters for 2012.”

Indeed. That’s really what happened with the last primary, wasn’t it?

Newt floats this trial balloon every 3 months or so.

Don’t bother, Newt. You wouldn’t even get as many electoral votes as McCain did.

Nah. He ain’t no global warming guy. He pays lip service. He isn’t in favor of an auctioned cap and trade or a carbon tax. He pays LIP SERVICE.

He would be entertaining in a debate, but the personal negatives and marital past make him an unlikely candidate. Then again, who would have predicted a President Obama? Or an Obama-McCain race in 2008.

We do need an articulate, highly principled candidate who can explain our views with some force while being charming. I just don’t think Newt’s the man because of the charming part. But who will it be? I don’t see anyone out there.

it's a sad state of affairs that we've only had one decent POTUS in the last 100 years...

and all we have gotten since RR are mostly retreads...

Is he going to get a speech coach to teach him how to formulate sentences without the word “fundamentally” in each and every one?

“Gingrich said he and his third wife, Callista,”

One would think he’d shut up about his wives. Of course that’s Newt’s main problem, he can’t shut up.

Please, let’s limit the draft dodging adulterer candidates to the other party.

Gingrich wouldn't be considered a draft dodger, he was already married by 1962, already had children by 1963 and had his Bachelors degree by 1965 and his PHD by 1971. Even in 1971 he was diagnosed by the draft board as having flat feet and nearsightedness. He isn't someone that was ever a part of the draft dodger efforts.
