Nazareth, Atkinson Decline to Endure Vetting Process, Adding to Geithner's Strain
WASHINGTON -- Two candidates for top jobs at the Treasury have withdrawn their names from consideration, complicating already troubled efforts by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner to staff his department at a time of economic crisis, according to people familiar with the matter.
Annette Nazareth, who was expected to be tapped as deputy Treasury secretary, and Caroline Atkinson, who was being considered to oversee international affairs, have both taken their names out of the running, these people said.
Across the administration, several potential candidates have been blocked by the Obama administration's tough rules about who it will hire. In addition, the White House increased the rigor of its vetting process after tax problems threatened Mr. Geithner's confirmation and scuttled that of former Sen. Tom Daschle.
The withdrawals aren't confined to the Treasury. Susan Tierney recently withdrew her name from consideration for the job of deputy secretary of energy for what a person close to her said were family reasons. Jane Garvey recently withdrew from consideration for the deputy secretary post at the Department of Transportation, according to people familiar with the matter.
People familiar with the matter said Ms. Nazareth and Ms. Atkinson withdrew in part because of the long vetting process, which had dragged on for weeks and included several rounds of intense questioning. Treasury is now said to be considering another person as deputy -- H. Rodgin Cohen, chairman of top law firm Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, who has been an adviser to virtually every firm on Wall Street, two people familiar with the matter said. Mr. Cohen declined to comment.
Ms. Nazareth's ability to get the job may have been complicated by her previous role at the Securities and Exchange Commission, where she ran the division with ............

Imagine if this was happening to a Republican President. The comics would be having a field day.
But of course, they can’t find anything about o to joke about.
Who in their right mind wants to be associated with the administration of The Clueless One.
Timmy... why do you need staff? To spread the blame?
The most corrupt administration in US history? It’s a close race with the Clinton administration.
Rats leaving... or not boarding a sinking ship.
Tha's supposed to be a joke, right?
Working for one of those guys can just ruin your own resume. I know ~ one of my bosses had an "experience" using a government TR (GTR) to fly with his girlfriend (a fellow postal worker) to Acapulco!
He got caught and fired RIGHT AWAY but I was actually asked by several possible future bosses "And what did you do to keep him out of trouble".
Not that Geitner uses GTRs to run off to Acapulco with his girlfriend, but he did cheat on his taxes!
What will he do next?
The Obama crowd created the most corrupt regime in American history even before he was sworn in.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, has withdrawn his name from consideration as surgeon general of the United States, an administration official said Thursday
ROFLMAO!!! The real truth is that anyone with an ounce of common sense & human decence & morality, does not want to have their names & reputations sullied by what is shaping up to be the worst, most corrupt U.S. presidency ever!!! Plus any of the names for consideration in the Treasury Dept absolutely do not want their careers & reputations as CFO's or CEO's destroyed by being associated with the bankruptcy & destruction of the U.S. financial system.
.
Sinking ship.
I’ll keep my my big ears to the ground.
I’m going to rest now knowing Obama is at the helm.
Emptying the prison because Washington needs employees.
Nice to see the WSJ has decided to lighten up and start a Funnies page.
Bingo.
Probably skipped on paying taxes or has illegal alien servants.
I don’t think he is clueless. He’s destroying the economy in order to rebuild it to his liking (marxist). I’ld say he’s doing a good job.
It’s probably making the whisper rounds that to live and work in the presence of the great and powerful O-man, you definitely have to compromise your principals and keep a lid on your American-ness.
These political appointees are shills, it’s true but the elevated conversation seems to be, “Well, yes I am a sell out but what will my family think of me if I was part of the group that helped destroy America?”
Wonder oh wonder what would have happened to 0bummer if he had gone through his own vetting process???
