For CCSU student John Wahlberg, a class presentation on campus violence turned into a confrontation with the campus police due to a complaint by the professor.
On October 3, 2008, Wahlberg and two other classmates prepared to give an oral presentation for a Communication 140 class that was required to discuss a relevant issue in the media. Wahlberg and his group chose to discuss school violence due to recent events such as the Virginia Tech shootings that occurred in 2007.
Shortly after his professor, Paula Anderson, filed a complaint with the CCSU Police against her student. During the presentation Wahlberg made the point that if students were permitted to conceal carry guns on campus, the violence could have been stopped earlier in many of these cases. He also touched on the controversial idea of free gun zones on college campuses.
That night at work, Wahlberg received a message stating that the campus police requested his presence. Upon entering the police station, the officers began to list off firearms that were registered under his name, and questioned him about where he kept them.
They told Wahlberg that they had received a complaint from his professor that his presentation was making students feel scared and uncomfortable.
I was a bit nervous when I walked into the police station, Wahlberg said, but I felt a general sense of disbelief once the officer actually began to list the firearms registered in my name. I was never worried however, because as a law-abiding gun owner, I have a thorough understanding of state gun laws as well as unwavering safety practices.
Professor Anderson refused to comment directly on the situation and deferred further comment.
It is also my responsibility as a teacher to protect the well being of our students, and the campus community at all times, she wrote in a statement submitted to The Recorder. As such, when deemed necessary because of any perceived risks, I seek guidance and consultation from the Chair of my Department, the Dean and any relevant University officials.
Wahlberg believes that her complaint was filed without good reason.
I dont think that Professor Anderson was justified in calling the CCSU police over a clearly nonthreatening matter. Although the topic of discussion may have made a few individuals uncomfortable, there was no need to label me as a threat, Wahlberg said in response. The actions of Professor Anderson made me so uncomfortable, that I didnt attend several classes. The only appropriate action taken by the Professor was to excuse my absences.
The university police were unavailable for comment.
If you cant talk about the Second Amendment, what happened to the First Amendment? asked Sara Adler, president of the Riflery and Marksmanship club on campus. After all, a university campus is a place for the free and open exchange of ideas.
Pretty hilarious that a “professor” of Communication stifles communication.
Wonder who else the comradette has turned in?
And the Liberals claim conservatives of being in favor of a police state.
"That's none of your business."
You guys have got to see this. A “professor” calls the cops on a student who was doing something the professor asked for, talk about a current issue. The cops then ask the student about all the guns registered in his name, having looked that information up. Spooky.
Geez, I guess the only safe topics would be gay marriage, Obama-worship, and the brilliance of tenured radicals.
Well, when he registered them, it became their business. Registration is a really, really bad idea. I’d like to see a court consider the question of what purpose the cops had in asking those questions.
I read the comments. They were all very positive about what an easy prof she was. That changed like switching a light bulb on Feb. 28. The students are all calling her out for being a fascist.
Shows me three things:
1. Like most liberals, I think this woman is totally lacking in any sort of common sense or sense of perspective.
2. Students will stick together, even if only anonymously, when one of their own is attacked by the fascists.
3. She is a case study in support of my belief that no college professor should ever receive tenure unless they have been employed in the private sector or served in the armed forces for at least five years.
Can you imagine an institution of higher learning that adopted that concept? In a generation (after you weeded out all the ivory tower liberal academics) you would have an institution that turned out some very marketable young people prepared to live real productive lives. In other words, exactly what a college should be doing. I’m sure that the diploma from such a school would carry instant employment and be worth its weight in gold.
I would like to have been his attorney at the time the cops started asking these questions. My response would have to been to ask the cop: “Are you cheating on your wife? Have you ever cheated on your current or previous wife? Does she know? How many times per week do you have sex with your wife? Or with your mistress?” When the cop gets indignant, tell him each party in the room has the same right to the information they seek.
So when you register a gun it becomes the cops' business where you keep it? How does that work?
Don’t ask me to explain it, because my mind doesn’t fit into the shape of a JBT’s, but I’m guessing they thought they had some sort of responsibility to uphold, knowing (as they do in places with mandatory registration) every gun everyone has registered. If I were the student, I’d sue for something, putting the question of what the cops were doing to the courts, as I have posted. Might be a way to get rid of registration, if you can show nothing good and a lot of bad comes from it.
Gosh, I wonder why the libs want firearms registered? >s
If decent people on campus would have been armed, this psycho's grisly toll would probably have been held to single digits.
Well,,,,I just read all the student’s ratings. It seems she was quite well-liked until she screwed the pooch with her crazy action of callin’ the campus cops on that student!
The student should sue the professor and the Unversity for a Civil Rights violation.
Its worth a few million.
Until the gun speech incident, it looks like they were describing her as an air-headed suck-up to athletes and an easy-A. As I learned even decades ago, the secret to getting a good grade in many classes, especially in the English department, is to figure out what the teacher (I won’t call them “professors”) wants to hear and tell that to them over and over. And what’s with college-level professors not telling students why they got the grade they got? My wife has been running into this with online classes. Giving students feedback and help is about the only think that justifies their otherwise worthless position. You can teach yourself by reading a book.
