Wal-Mart February Same-Store Sales Soared, Others Beat Estimates
Wall Street Journal ^ | 3/5/2009

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. posted February same-store sales more than double analysts' expectations, as a host of other retailers have been exceeding downbeat estimates amid the continued slide in consumer spending.

The company regained its footing after sales growth slowed somewhat the prior two months. Wal-Mart has been benefiting from the slumping sales seen by other retailers as consumers trade down and do more bargain shopping.

The world's largest retailer reported a 5.1% increase in U.S. same-store sales last month, excluding gasoline sales, with the namesake chain posting a 5% increase and ...

We shop there weekly, especially since they moved into the Super Center /groceries. We still get our meats from the Fareway Store for the most part.

As much as the news is good that Wal-Mart has prospered during these times....I just wonder when they, too, start slumping.

This economy is not getting any better with the Dems running things.

And, the Dems tend to not like Wal-Mart...even with its low prices

I visited the local K-Mart yesterday and was told that they are seeing a pickup in business also.

We had two or three KMarts around here at one time...the one left has been doing okay, we’ve got two WallyWorlds and the one I will not go into, very “grungy” as compared to any other WallyWorld I’ve been in.
The Kmart is generally in nice shape.

I went to Wal Mart yesterday and I can tell you there are lots of hidden price hikes..Every week they put an added penny or two.. onto food items..Also the store brand are cheaper or were, but now you have to look really close to those prices too..We have a HEB super store just down the street from WAl Mart and they also are like Wal Mart. The gas prices are the same usually at both stores..HEB btw is a local chain store here in Texas..

I always shop at Walmart as well. Makes no sense paying more for something if you don't have to.
Plus, since Walmart came to the small town I usually shop in, I can now buy shirts. Never before, not in 30+ years, was I able to buy a decent mens shirt anywhere in that one horse town.
All they ever sold in that town was children's and women's clothing. The only mens wear was at the local hardware store and consisted of overalls, steel toed boots, and plaid shirts. You could buy camoflage stuff and sweat pants at the sporting goods store. Now my casual wear has a little more style and variety, thanks to Walmart

Walmart rocks! There is never a quibble over returned goods, receipt or no receipt.

Same old story, look after the customer and the customer will look after you.

Well, being in the food business, I can tell you that prices can fluxuate daily from the wholesale/manufacturer side for tons of different reasons...of course Wal-mart (and any other retailer) has to pass that along in their prices.

I still like paying $5.00 less (or $4.94 less if the price goes up a little) on a monster bag of dog food at Wally World vs. a local grocery chain.

While a 1-2 cent price increase from week to week at Wal-mart might seem to be a diabolical plot to scam the masses, I assure you it’s not...their revenues are up, but *profits* are down.

I’m sure W-M owes all this success to the brilliant guidance of former board member Hillary Clinton.

I have to admit I do buy my dog food from the pet store where I have my dog groomed..Also buy cheap dog food that I feed the wild animals that come up at night here..We feed the Racoons and deer and all the critter so that has to be bought from Tractor Supply a feed store here..that is lots cheaper..

I don’t like Walmart, but since money is tight I went there looking for bargains...first off...the meat is from Mexico,Canada or the US-this turned me off. The shrimp is from third world hell holes so no seafood. I talked with another shopper who said that the meat is disgusting and she found an eyeball in in ground beef which comes ground from the meat packing place and is re-ground at Walmart...yuck! Ok no meat bargains for me. I checked out other prices...honestly, I could do better at the sales from Giant Eagle and Sparkles...I ended up buying english muffins 16 for 1.86, bagels-1.49 for 8 and whipping cream -just under three dollars...so much for Walmart. You can do just as well or better in other stores. Even shirts are cheaper at Kohls sometimes.

So, you are saying that she found an eyeball that had some how survived two trips through the grinding process. I somehow find that had to believe.

If you don’t care for Walmart thats fine, but to make over the trip statements like that weakens your arguement.

On things that they both carry, IKEA totally blows Wal Mart out of the water. On very similar toilet brushes/stands, wal mart was $6, not bad until you see that IKEA had a very similar one for $1.

What do you think of this?

WalMart refuses to carry Goldberg’s book on media bias, which is #9 on the best seller list...Wal Mart says it is ‘anti-Obama’

From the Glenn Beck website today:

Goldberg: I just find out now that a company that I’ve defended about 10,000 times, Wal-Mart, the biggest retailer in America, won’t sell my book because they won’t sell anti-Barack Obama books. This is not an anti-Barack Obama book. It’s an anti media bias book.

GLENN: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa.

GOLDBERG: Yeah, you heard it correctly. You heard it correctly. They have ordered —

GLENN: Wait a minute. How do you know that? Where have you heard that?

GOLDBERG: Publisher has told my representative that we have sold no books at Wal-Mart because they will not buy the book because they don’t want to sell anti-Obama books. Now, we’re waiting for a statement from Wal-Mart and we’ve been waiting since last Friday for a statement because I heard about this Friday evening. I have a call in; Fox News has a call in. We haven’t heard back yet. Now, what I’m saying is if somebody like me can’t get my views out on places like NBC, ABC, CBS and NPR because they don’t want to hear these kinds of views and I can’t get my views out in the biggest retailer in America, I mean, thank God for Glenn Beck.

GLENN: Bernie, I have to tell you.

GOLDBERG: You don’t believe me, right?

GLENN: No, I don’t. I want to see the evidence of that and I also want to see — and ask your publisher for this. I also want to see if there were any anti-Bush books that were sold at Wal-Mart. There had to have been.

GOLDBERG: We’re going to find out.

GLENN: And I’m not willing to throw Wal-Mart under the bus on that. That doesn’t make any business sense whatsoever.

GOLDBERG: I’ve defended this company against crazy criticism over the years.

GLENN: Yeah. So have I.

GOLDBERG: But if they don’t get back to us, that’s on them.

GLENN: Okay. So Bernie, listen. I want you to get back. Could you come back tomorrow on this program and give us the results of this?

GOLDBERG: I’m flying. I’m going to be in the air tomorrow, but the next day I can.

GLENN: Okay. So you come back and you give us the results of that because I would like to know the results of that. And I would like to know which books they have sold in the past. I will tell you, Bernie, that if this is happening, this is a sign of something else that, you know, you probably thought was crazy when I said it a year ago that companies are going to be taken over by the government. They will be nationalized like the banks and people will be so afraid.

Well of course this changes everything. I will bring to the attention of the local Walmart manager. Clearly this is an infraction of Freedom of Speech (Truth)

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Question, do they sell PRO Obama books? If not then neutrality might be a good reason, even though questionable.

One freeper did find that you can order the book from Wal Mart’s website, but they won’t carry it in the stores.
