Who leads the US Republican Party?

There can be little doubt as to who is currently in charge of America's Democratic Party.

From behind his desk in the Oval Office, Barack Obama can usually rely on the members of his party to follow his lead.

But the divided nature of the American political system means that the party that does not hold the White House does not have a single figure it can look to for leadership.

This means that the Republicans - who currently hold neither the White House, nor either House of Congress - find themselves without a leader.

A number of high-profile Republicans are attempting to fill this vacuum by promoting their own policy ideas, and the resulting debate about the future direction of the party has been vigorous, verging on rancorous.

'Hip hop settings'

Nominally, the job of bringing together the various distinct entities and factions that go to make up the Republican Party belongs to Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC).

Mr Steele is responsible for overseeing the party's campaigning and fundraising operations; so while Senators and Governors speak for their states, and congressmen speak for their districts, Mr Steele is - by virtue of his position - one of the few party officials with a national perspective.

He won election to his position in January, and during the campaign he was characterised as a moderate.

In his acceptance speech, he struck a note of inclusiveness: "We're going to say to friend and foe alike: We want you to be a part of us, we want you to with be with us."

Since taking up his post, he has raised eyebrows with his attempts to use slang in order to - in his words - "apply [conservative principles] to urban-suburban hip-hop settings."

I would say that Michael Steele is in charge of the Grand Old Party.

Rush Limbaugh is THE cheerleader for Conservatives within the GNP.

The Problem is.. Not too many Conservative Republicans lead when they get into office.. they compromise and try to make themselves look like lite democrats “to get along”.

You need to try to understand the Brits though after many years of trying I have failed. At once charming and offensive, they have it all.

One thing about them though is that US politics are a mystery to them. They also suffer from the tendency to view anything not British as not being.

In this case I can certainly see their point of view. The RNC has become like most of the US, so politically correct and inclusive that it stands for nothing.

Clinton took office and began to overreach. Hillary wanted universal health care. Bill was raising taxes, even retroactively. What stopped the push to Left were two men: Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich. Rush articulated what conservatism offered America and had fun doing it. Gingrich brought the Contract With America that spelled out exactly what the Republicans would do if they ran the House.

The GOP needed both to get anything done. Limbaugh would have been powerless to affect change as a Washington outsider. Gingrich would have had no megaphone to use without Limbaugh's radio network. Together, they overthrew the leftward lurch of the Clintons and put the House in GOP hands for the rest of the 1990s.

It can happen again under Obama if the GOP finds their voice on tax cuts and stimulating rather than regulating business. Limbaugh is still around but Gingrich has gone wobbly and is no longer in office. What the GOP needs is a conservative in the House that can serve as the flash point for a new Contract With America. There may be others, but Mike Pence appears to be our best shot.

If we can't pull this off in 2010, we may never again get the chance to take our country back.

They have the best cranks, too: Even with people like Ross Perot, Keith Olbermann, Ron Paul, etc., we can’t compete!

Maybe that would be the ticket.

The Conservative Party of American
Allow the GOP/RNC fade to black.

Rush says that the RNC is a fundraising department and Steele does not run the GOP.
