David Plouffe: Minority Leader Limbaugh (Obama's Campaign Manager Weighs In - Barf Alert)
The Washington Post ^ | March 4, 2009 | David Plouffe, Obama 2008 Campaign Chairman

Posted on 03/04/2009 11:53:16 AM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

The 2008 election sent many messages. At the top: Americans wanted to turn the page on the politics of division and partisan pettiness, and they wanted a government -- and country -- that would put the middle class first.

Watching the Republicans operate this past month, it would appear that they missed that unmistakable signal.

Instead, Rush Limbaugh has become their leader.

Limbaugh, of course, told his radio listeners that he's rooting for President Obama to fail -- and hoping the president's ideas for bolstering our economy fail with him. For many Americans, hungry for leadership and cooperation, this sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard. When Limbaugh reiterated the sentiment this weekend, hundreds of Republican conservatives cheered him on. But instead of rebuking the radio personality or charting their own course, Republican leaders in Washington are paralyzed with fear of crossing their leader. Less than 24 hours after committing the unforgivable sin of criticizing Limbaugh, RNC Chairman Michael Steele felt compelled to publicly apologize. He was not the first and will certainly not be the last.

Limbaugh's voice could be heard in the words of new Republican quarterback Eric Cantor, who says the GOP's strategy will be to "Just Say No" -- not for substantive or philosophical reasons but to advance Limbaugh's strategy for failure. Independent voters, those who find the ways of Washington particularly toxic, could be forgiven for wondering whether the Republican minority has any clue what is happening in our country.

Last week's Post-ABC News poll shows that voters trust President Obama on the economy by a remarkable 35 percentage points more than they trust Republicans in Congress -- the biggest advantage for a president on this question since George H.W. Bush basked in public approval of his handling of the Persian Gulf War in 1991.

They’re going to find out very quickly that they’re kicking a very big, very powerful giant.

Limbaugh challenged Obama to a policy debate today. A brilliant move on his part, and for the foreseeable future he should bash Obama for (A) standing behind Gibbs and others to lob criticisms at Rush, and (B) being afraid to have an honest debate with a citizen that his administration calls the face of the opposition party.

They´re goading the impotent Republican party; mocking them because nobody is willing to step up to the plate and say, “I´m getting paid to represent the Republican party as a public servant, not Limbaugh. If you have a bone to pick, you go through me, but leave this private citizen alone.” The entire party is standing by, too worried about their personal image to defend the staunchest defender of conservativism today, so that they can save their own hides. I include every single Republican acting as a public servant. Stanford, Jindal, Palin, you name it. They don´t have the guts to defend their own best friend.

This reminds me of the old hard working horse in animal farm. Limbaugh is getting thrown to the dogs, and we all sit here and cheer it on.

Believe me, I understand that Limbaugh is more than up to the challenge, but that doesn´t make any of it right.

“Republican leaders in Washington are paralyzed with fear of crossing their leader.”

Liar, liar! Pants on fire! The Republicans aren’t afraid of Rush; they’re afraid of you. Rush isn’t, and he knows he’s right and that you are afraid he will expose your lies and hypocrisies.

Worse yet for you, he will expose the fact that you are on a mission to destroy that middle class you mentioned.

Liar, liar! Pants on fire!

they wanted a government -- and country -- that would put the middle class first.

Well here's the disconnect, Marxism destroys the middle class and that's what this administration is hell-bent on doing and why Rush wants it to fail

The economy is on the verge of collapse and these a-holes are worried about Rush. I’m sick of this. They need to re-vamp that stimulus package and get a fair share of all of that money to ALL of the “American” people - PRONTO!

A debate with Rush. That’s hysterical! Hussein won’t even take genuine questions from his media flunkies.

The CW is that the democrats are brilliant for tying Rush to the Republicans. Rush is unpopular (never minding his colossal listenership) therefore depicting him as the leader of the Republican party will make the Republicans even more unpopular providing cover as Nero, errr I mean Obama, fiddles while Rome, err I mean our country, burns.

Their reasoning is flawed. First off this shows that without Bush Derangement Syndrome the democrats have little to rally around. Secondly, Rush has a microphone at his disposal every day to refute the democrats. Finally, this will mean more people tuning into his show. At first they may tune in just to hate him but as Obama’s policies fail Rush's words will gain credibility.

It is said that the former Clintonoids are behind this, Carville, Begalla and Rahm the Fry Mon. Mr. Carville, you should have retired, you are playing a political game and that is your forte. But you don't realize that you are playing it based on Rush's rules.

Lastly, I have to wonder, who will give a damn about whether Rush wants the ONE to fail or not if the ONE is actually failing. Failure is failure. I mean, what is Obama going to say, “My plans would have succeeded if only Rush had wanted them to.”

Any conservative who doesn’t have Rush’s back against this pernicious onslaught is no conservative, IMO.

The vast majority of people listening to Rush Limbaugh are middle class. Obama doesn’t stand for them, Rush does.
