An 18-month-old Sumter boy died Monday afternoon of starvation, authorities said.
Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock said the autopsy results released Tuesday indicated the child died of starvation. He ruled the death a homicide.
"In my opinion, there is no excuse for anybody to be living in the condition those five children were living in," Bullock said. "The conditions in the house were deplorable."
The parents, Kevin DeWayne Isaac, 25, and Marketta Sharnise McCray, 23, of 132 Carolina Ave., were each charged with homicide by child abuse or neglect and unlawful conduct of a child.
They were being held in Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center. Bond had not yet been set, but Police Chief Patty Patterson said police would request that bond be denied when the hearing is held. The hearing has not yet been scheduled.
Patterson, speaking with reporters about 5:30 p.m., was obviously shaken as she described the filth of the house and how small and frail the little boy was when police officers arrived.
"In my 30 years of being in law enforcement, this is probably one of the most horrific incidences I have witnessed," she said. "The size of the child, an 18-month-old -- there are some newborns who are larger than that child was."
The boy had a twin sister. She is in Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia in serious to critical condition, Patterson said, adding that the little girl also appeared to be severely malnourished.
Three other children, ages 9, 6 and 4, did not have any obvious health problems, Patterson said, but medical personnel will evaluate them and provide whatever treatment they may need. These children were taken into emergency protective custody by the state Department of Social Services.

Just look at the parents and you can tell that those babies were in trouble. An 18 month old youngling at 4 pounds?? My friend has a baby whos about that age and he’s closer to 24 pounds.
Both of those animals ... sorry parents should be shot.
One would think they’d take better care of their meal tickets.

Bet there’s more than even 2 fathers involved in these kids’ conceptions.
I would bet that DeWayne was probably not in the picture 9 years ago. I have a strong suspicion that, the except for the twins, the other 3 children all have different fathers.

I must respectfully disagree. Starve the SOBs, and save the cost of the bullet. Of course, your plan has the advantage of immediate gratification.
Perhaps we could starve them and then shoot them.
Homicide? I thought it would just be considered a “post-term abortion”.
Oh well. Give Zero a couple more years.
I lament every single day that I am no longer able to have children. When I read stories like these, I weep for days.
