Ted Kennedy to receive knighthood (Redcoat Royals!!!)
BBC News ^ | 4 March 2009 | BBC

Veteran US senator Ted Kennedy, 77, is to be awarded an honorary knighthood.

The Queen has agreed the honour for the brother of former US president John F Kennedy for services to the US-UK relationship and to Northern Ireland.

Gordon Brown is to formally announce the award during his address to both houses of Congress on Wednesday.

The prime minister's speech comes on the second full day of his visit to which featured brief talks with President Obama on Tuesday.

Mr Kennedy, who has been a senator for his home state of Massachusetts for more than 46 years, is being treated for a brain tumour.

The most senior living member of the famous Irish-American political dynasty, he was diagnosed with brain cancer in May last year after being rushed to hospital with stroke-like symptoms.

He has since had chemotherapy and radiation to treat the malignant glioma, an aggressive type of brain tumour.

Mr Kennedy suffered another seizure during President Barack Obama's inaugural lunch in January, but was released from hospital a day later.

The father-of-five was elected to the US Senate as a Democrat in 1962 following the election of his brother as president.

Apart from his famous family connections, he is probably best known in the UK for his work on the Northern Ireland peace process.

Mr Kennedy joins a select band of overseas nationals given an honorary knighthood.

...been a senator for his home state of Massachusetts for more than 46 years...

Sure beats having to work for a living.

This is shameful for us over here as well. Knighthood is getting the same value as the Nobel Peace Prize.

Maybe he should have received the Order of the Bath.

For service beyond the call of duty in pursuit of the waitress sandwich.

First of all, thats nonsense. Many Americans have been given honourary knighthoods over the years, including Ronald Reagan. Thats what happens with high-ranking politicians in allied and friendly countries. However, I fail to see how Ted Kennedy deserves one when he made statements giving succour to IRA terrorists during the height of the troubles....

I think it’s just deliciously revealing that the American “Dynasty” of Kennedy gets also the outter trappings of Aristocracy.

Article I, Section 9 of the US Constitution:

“No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince or foreign State.”

It’s been the House of Lords for quite a while now. Ever since the “right of succession” was allowed. Gore, Chaffee, Dodd, Bayh are some of the “divine right” crowd.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's this "Constitution" thing of which you write? I have some vague recollection of something, but it's been a while now...

Eisenhower:

Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath

Soviet Order of Suvorov

Patton:

Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath

Bradley:

British Order of the Bath

MacArthur:

Knights Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath

Ronald Reagan

Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath

This is by no means a complete list of awards and titles given by foreign powers to these five men, all of whom we acknowledge as great leaders in American history.

And I expect that that the consent of Congress was received by them before they accepted the awards.

The story does not state what order Teddy is to receive. I certainly do not believe him worthy of honor. But if the Queen and the British government wish to give him one that is their business. I assume that Congress will allow him to receive it. It's not like it's unprecedented.

Lord Nelson, England's greatest naval hero had four orders of knighthood and commanded the 100 gun ship HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. He died there.

Sir Teddy the Sot, now Ireland's greatest naval hero attempted to drive the 8 cylinder submersible SS Oldsmobile at the Bridge of Chappaquiddick. He ran away.

Hero of the Soviet Union is more appropriate given his treasonous behaviour in the Reagan years.

Just out of curiosity, did Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, MacArthur or Reagan receive these honours whilst holding an Office of Profit or Trust?

Gee, now Ted Kennedy and Elton John are buddies. I bet a certain large congressman is jealous of that connection.
