No Labor Pains (Obama gives the go-ahead to card check to the AFL-CIO)
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, 44th Estate ^ | March 3, 2009 | Salena Zito

Here are the remarks (as prepared for delivery) that President Barack Obama spoke via video to the AFL-CIO executive Council in Miami today.

At the very end of the speech, Obama made what all of labor hoped and expected: a promise to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, or 'card-check' for short. Here goes:

Offering insults in response to answers is not the path to credibility. Neither is “I know you are, but what am I?”

BTW, what “nazi tactics” are you talking about? All I saw was you whining about them refusing your application for membership.

I bet Walmart is the first big target of the Union goons.

I'm not so sure about that.

Wal-Mart will be the last target and the union won't have to do a thing to turn them. They will pay Congress to do it.

There are literally thousands of large companies who are much easier to target and turn union shop without hardly a fight.

Once the union get enough power and money flowing out of the coerced membership going into union thug accounts they will pay Congress to pass anti-monopoly legislation targeted against Wal-Mart.

Google A&P history. At their height of power, they make Wal-Mart look like a piker. Congress smashed them.

BTW, I work for a multi billion company and they are scared to death about this issue. Two hour conference call meeting today to plan strategy

Boy, that ought to boost employment in the US --- NOT!

Anybody that has an operation in this country ought to close it down and leave. This is NOT a desirable country in which to do business.

That's not going to help you if you run your business like your own personal fiefdom. Organized labor wouldn't exist if not for businesses that use something other than the quality of their product to compete.

Thanks. But I've not found liberals to be more productive than conservatives. Conservatives show up early, stay late, work hard, don't take sick days unless they are sick. Send thank you cards for bonuses and generally improve organizational productivity. Liberals, on the other hand... don't. So they are usually the first to go.

Oh, and if Obama passes a law that protects people from being let go because of political beliefs, then conservative special interest law firms are teed up and waiting to sue the crap out of anyone who touches us for any reason. At last, we will have parity with the Left.

Check mate!

Frankly, it’s probably time to bring back the gangbusters. Nothing says “you’re not welcome here” like a throng of anti-communist bruisers. Fight fire with fire.

Check mate!

Refusing to "get it" does not give you the "win." Conservatives don't take it any better than liberals when their employer abuses their position, particularly when that "employer" is not the owner, but another employee, albeit of higher rank on the org chart.

Where do you see any "fire?"

Organizing Walmart is the Holy Grail of today's labor movement. If they can organize that they can organize anything.

The people who think this will solve the problems of working people forget the first thing a working person needs is a job. The second thing the working man needs is a stable economy where the money he gets is not eaten up by hyperinflation. If "Card Check" passes there will be both increased unemployment and inflation and I do not see us getting out of the hole.

Forcing unionization down the throats of businesses is "fire". I worked 11 years in a closed shop union - the union was nothing but a bunch of lazy, underhanded crybaby communists. They would do anything to get out of actually having to work.

Seeing what the UAW has done to the domestic auto industry, it's pretty obvious that this can't be a good thing. It will chase the few remnants of manufacturing capability out of this country.

Forcing unionization down the throats of businesses is "fire".

I see.

Keeping the option to organize "open" is "force." You worked for 11 years at a place that shouldn't have been able to survive if your report is credible. UAW has "done to" the domestic auto industry despite absolutely zero influence on whether the cars they built were "big sellers" or not.

Any other "newspeak" you'd like to promote?

I heard all this back when FMLA was going to give every lazy slug four months off. Funny thing was, no one was talking about how it was designed to be taken one day at a time, and within very tightly controlled parameters. I heard about the violation of employers property rights when they fought letting their employees keep guns in their cars, though they disavow any responsibility for the workers physical safety from criminal assault. I heard how all the "free market" champions cried when that free market turned against them with rising labor prices... so they started hiring illegals.

You've got a lot of gaul, not for your position, but for the irresponsible rhetoric you throw around like an offended schoolgirl.

I speak exactly from what I experienced. You obviously see the world through the eyes of a union thug - elsewise, you'd see what is obvious. Unions are poison to the economy.

Any time you want to call me an "offended schoolgirl" to my face, feel free to come on down to Tennessee. Bring a few of your union buddies - you'll need 'em.

Ah, if it were only that easy, you might have some credibility. Do you live on a golf course? Are you married to a corporate vice president? Do you run a successful small business that never spent a dime on advertising? Sorry, the whole "put that dog to sleep, cause every time I kick it, it tries to bite me" mentality isn't going to cut it in today's marketplace.

How pathetic does one have to become to actually use the "say it to my face" chestnut across the internet...? If you're not ashamed, your psyche is corrupted.

I doubt very much that "thought" has intruded into your opinions.
