Geithner Touts Tackling Tax Evaders After Failing to Pay Own Taxes

The pot has issued the kettle an ultimatum: tax dodgers beware.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who was forced to fork up $34,000 in unpaid back taxes, told the House Ways and Means Committee Tuesday that the Obama administration will be going after people who avoid and evade taxes.

In prepared remarks before Congress, he said the president is intent on "tackling tax shelters and other efforts to abuse our tax laws, including international tax evasion efforts."

Geithner himself never used a tax haven to avoid payment, but did neglect to pay Medicare and Social Security taxes while he was a self-employed staffer for the International Monetary Fund. He even hired an accountant for two of the years he forgot to file.

"Over the next several months," he said Tuesday, "the President will propose a series of legislative and enforcement measures to reduce such U.S. tax evasion and avoidance."

I heard part of his testimony. Seems they are going to advocate the "IRS filing the returns" and telling people how much tax they owe.

That would only work for those people who don't itemize their returns.

This statement might be believable if Geithner and Daschle were currently being prosecuted for tax evasion.

Since neither one has been charged, there are only two possible conclusions. 1) The claim is a total lie. or 2) The 0bama administration intends selective enforcement of tax laws.

I guess I better go hire a good tax lawyer.

I have dodged and under-reported for years.

We have evaded sales tax, as well.

We have not paid any FICA/SDI/Medicare or other taxes on any of our labor, nor on our non-cash income.

How, you ask, have I gotten away with such flagrant violations?

Every year, I put a deer and a few turkeys into the freezer.
Just think of the sales tax for the equivalent sales of meat and poultry the state didn't receive. Just think of all the hours of labor involved in the hunting, butchering, and freezing of it that I didn't report as “income” at even minimum wage I didn't pay myself. OMG! That puts me in violation of state & Federal Labor Law! Horrors; I'm a hard core federal felon!

We harvest most of our veggies, taters, and fruit from our garden and home-orchard.
We pick wild fruits and berries, and even make our own fruit syrups.

Ditto to the meat ‘production’ crimes listed above.

I have no idea how much we are cheating the state and feds out of when we turn a couple of bucks of staples and perishables into “expensive” breads, cakes, pies, gooey goodies, and succulent sweets.

Let's not even get into the can of worms presented by felling, cutting, splitting, and burning firewood, all without pollution control permits, taxes, OSHA inspections, etc.

OTOH, if I'm lucky, they'll just lock me up for life in a Club Fed, with free food, entertainment, and medical care for life.

Speaking of tackling tax shelters, I wonder if O’s IRS will rule that using coupons at the store is a form of ‘income’ that must be added to one’s earnings?
