SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A new study is revealing, what some may consider, startling information about Utahans and what they do online. New research shows Utah is number one in the nation for online pornography subscriptions.
The research is just coming out Tuesday, from a study done by Harvard Business School Professor Benjamin Edelman, published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives. It tracks subscriptions to online pornography sites by states.
The study measures the online porn subscriptions per thousand people, per thousand homes with internet users, per thousand homes with broadband users, and also when accounting for the differences in income, age, education and marital status.
Utah tops the list in every category.
In the category, per thousand people, Utah had 1.69 subscriptions per thousand. Followed by Hawaii 1.37, and Alaska 1.15. Last, West Virginia .50.
In the category, per thousand homes with internet users, Utah had 2.49 subscriptions per thousand. Followed by Hawaii 2.19, and Nevada 1.85. Last, West Virginia .89
In the category, per thousand homes with broadband users, Utah had 5.47 subscriptions per thousand. Followed by Alaska 5.03, and Mississippi 4.30. Last, Montana 1.92.
In the category accounting for differences in income, age, education, and marital status, Utah had 1.89 subscriptions per thousand. Followed by Florida 1.26, and Alaska 1.08. Last, Idaho -1.11.
The study found subscriptions were more prevalent in states that have enacted conservative legislation on sexuality, and states with younger populations.
When asked about Utah specifically, the author of the study, Benjamin Edelman, said one possibility why Utah may be so high among online pornography subscriptions is because pornography is more difficult to find there. He said among people who wish to view it, online may be their only option.
Idaho ranked last...[insert obscene velcro glove joke]
(apologies to Idaho, I couldn't resist).
ABC is putting a political spin on this, predictably.
ABC Radio News, that is.
I found this on their local TV affiliate. What are they saying on their national radio broadcast?
The evil moral conservatives depriving the people of Utah their civil rights to view pornographic filth.
What crap!

I would expect there are few places one can go in Utah to buy porn, therefore on line would be the default choice. What’s a lib to do if he’s sent by his California based company to work in Utah anyway?
Considering the “state religion” (if you will... LOL...) is about “screwing into perpetuity” (in Heaven, doncha know...) — that’s sort of understandable...
I’d rather say that the more enterprising porn hunters simply sponge it off for free on the internet.
Utah might be less into piracy...
...just a thought.
IBTZ?
Sounds like the Liberal Media is doing another anti-Mormon/anti-Utah hit piece because Prop 8 did not pass in California.
This reeks of more anti-Mormon HomoFascism
Not surprising. Considering that most people can’t tell men from women in Alaska for half the year...The Alaskan version of erotic sleepwear is a flannel nightgown with a hole in it.
Local availability (or lack thereof) was also cited by the head of the study as part of the reason for the results.
It will be interesting to see how this is spun by the media (despite the note by the study author). According to skeeter, they’re already spinning (see post 2 and 3).
According to http://www.statemaster.com/graph/peo_med_age-people-median-age most of the high-subscription states also have the youngest populations (Utah has the youngest population, Alaska’s is third youngest, and Mississippi’s is eighth youngest). West Virginia and Montana, which have two of the lowest subscription rates, have the third and fourth oldest populations.
Common sense says younger populations will have higher subscription rates.
Man, you would think they wouldn’t have time for porn with all those wives. JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!
I have Morman friends.
I really wonder why this is being reported as news?
If a liberal place such as SF was # 1 in online “gay” whatever, would that ever be reported as news?
What conclusions are we supposed to draw? That there are Mormons who are into a vice type activity? That this means all morality is useless because look at what those Mormons are doing privately? what exactly is the point of a “news” story such as this?
now that is thought outside of the box.
perhaps we need also consider quality and not just quantity
meaning this thread needs pics.
Utah has deviants like any other state.
So Utah’s 1.69 deviants per thousand people find their outlet within their own residences.
New York’s deviants go out in public to find their outlet.
Which state has the higher crime rate?
