Didn’t we kind of know this was coming with the new tatoo/piercing craze? Wanna bet cliterodectomies by choice are coming, from those who “don’t want to be slaves to their physical bodies?”
This has been a “startling new trend” for more than 20 years.
This is hardly a new trend. There were “Cutting” teenagers already in the 1990’s.
This is another unitended consequence of artificial contraception.
What is society doing for young men? These are the ones w/the target on their backs.

Another non-profit that works not only with cutters but peripheral problems related like addiction, depression is “To Write Love on her arms”... I know they sometimes send out Christian bands and talk to young folks especially the women I met a marvelous woman who gave her testimony at a concert for TWLOHO.
Those of us who are way past that age probably are either in denial that this is a huge problem or wonder if its just some sort of way to get attention. But it is serious and effects huge numbers of young folks.
The best way to describe simplistically what I think is happening is that these persons hurt so much on the inside the act of cutting is a way to release the pain so it will come out when they bleed It is really a commentary on our society and the value we place on people.
This is as old as time itself, why pretend it’s new?
Not that it’s a good thing by any means, but it’s not new. Kids did this over twenty years ago when I was in jr. high and high school.
Logically, it seems to follow that most do not share that view.
I read this and think “it takes a village.”
Some children just aren’t emotionally ready to be criticized and judged by others when they get to school. Certainly, not all children are capable of dealing with all the social pressure at the same age.Perhaps there is an element of naivete’; some children hear they are stupid, ugly, fat, etc. enough times, they believe it.
I wonder if the Amish communities have the same prevalence of this disorder? How about home schooled? I doubt it in either case.
It’s all part of the “go tribal” trend, which includes rap music, tats, gangs and all the rest. Take away the technology and America looks more and more like a bunch of the wild savages the Victorians were so enchanted with.
And there's lots of them - some of it's real - more pain than the kids can handle - and some of it's copycat stuff. The adults in this narcissistic culture need to get their acts together.
A sports friend of my son’s was a cutter in high school. He eventually committed suicide. I am beyond words.

At this point the author loses credibility. There is a minority of kids/girls who do this. But let’s just create an epidemic...kinda like the factoid women are beaten more during the superbowl lol
My daughter has a friend — a very pretty, cute little 16 year-old girl — who has lately started doing this.
They went to the movues the other night and my daughter noticed the cuts on her arm and asked her about it.
I just don’t get it.
I’d say spending your childhood in daycare also is a contributing factor. Cutting is what someone does who’s desperately trying to get someone to pay attention to them.
