A new study shows that states that consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption.
"When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.
However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.
"Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.
Edelman spends part of his time helping companies such as Microsoft and AOL detect advertising fraud. Another consulting client runs dozens of adult websites, though he says he is not at liberty to identify the firm.
That company provided Edelman with roughly two years of credit card data from 2006 to 2008 that included a purchase date and each customer's postal code.
After controlling for differences in broadband internet access between states online porn tends to be a bandwidth hog and adjusting for population, he found a relatively small difference between states with the most adult purchases and those with the fewest.
The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. "The differences here are not so stark," Edelman says.
Number 10 on the list was West Virginia at 2.94 subscriptions per 1000, while number 41, Michigan, averaged 2.32.
Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama.

States don't consume porn. People consume porn.
How do we know it isn't the libs who are living in the conservative states who are the porn consumers?
Maybe there should be a study of the mindset of libs who live in conservative states.
Is it difficult for them to find a willing partner? Do they get a special thrill from the thought that their neighbors would be shocked at what they do?

Unfortunately, ABC started its report by stating a starkly contrary conclusion, then went off on a circuitous safari in search of data to support it. In reality, theres absolutely nothing in the study to support ABCs flimsy conclusion that conservatives consume more porn than liberals, because theres nothing in the study that asked the respondents if they were conservative or liberal. Nothing.
But above and beyond ABC's outrageous claims, we believe the study itself has serious problems.
For example, the study tracked only paid porn services and completely overlooked the vast quantity of free porn consumed online. That decision, it seems to us, immediately throws all the surveys results into question. Its like describing the Grand Canyon after viewing it through a keyhole.
I’m more of a “Thigh” man myself.
I'm sure ABC LOVES poking a finger in the eye of those mean, nasty, hypocritial Christians. I wonder if ABC ever considered the possibility that the states that had the lower rates of porn downloads might also be those that have more of a presence of Adult book and video stores and movie theaters, making it less necessary for folks to get their porn from the internet. And since we know that there are liberal folks who live in conservative areas, if those areas don't have brick and mortar porn locations, they HAVE to get it from the Internet.
Now I'm not so naive as to believe that there are no Christians who enjoy porn, but I don't think they are in the hugh numbers as this report suggests.
I believe it was Mark Twain who was credited as saying, "There's lies, there's DAMN lies, and then there's Statistics."
That statement always amuses my hubby, who is a PhD Statistician, because he agrees completely! ;o)
His first-ever post was a thread he started on a “proud conservative” DA-intern who got drunk, got arrested, and went loco on the police.
I mean, really... Could one be more obvious?
They didn’t mention me by name, did they?
Frankly, with all the porn I accidentally came across (before I discovered the adult filter) with limewire, maybe this is an indictment on their intelligence, as opposed to moral character.
Do people still pay for porn?
There was another person with “conservative” in his name that attempted to argue that the states were not sovereign and that the founders set up the federal government as a superior entity to the states, with unlimited powers, and almost none left at the state level.
That argument was easily refuted (by an informed 5 yr old), and then we didn’t hear from that person again...
As for this thread - “states” consume porn?
Kansas looking at a Missouri/Arkansas/Oklahoma threesome or something?
Sure. You can trust ABC news.

El Presidente Jorge Bush is a FReeper?
I don’t know if this has been pointed out, but it is illegal to receive porn in the mail in Utah, and there are no porn shops in Utah. Therefore, of course there would be more online porn consumption there. Not only Utah, but other “Bible Belt Red” states have the same situation.
I’m sure the propagandist is well aware of this, and is also well aware of who in those states are consuming.
