A new study shows that states that consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption.
"When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.
However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.
"Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.
Edelman spends part of his time helping companies such as Microsoft and AOL detect advertising fraud. Another consulting client runs dozens of adult websites, though he says he is not at liberty to identify the firm.
That company provided Edelman with roughly two years of credit card data from 2006 to 2008 that included a purchase date and each customer's postal code.
After controlling for differences in broadband internet access between states online porn tends to be a bandwidth hog and adjusting for population, he found a relatively small difference between states with the most adult purchases and those with the fewest.
The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. "The differences here are not so stark," Edelman says.
Number 10 on the list was West Virginia at 2.94 subscriptions per 1000, while number 41, Michigan, averaged 2.32.
Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama.

Conservatives look at porn?
Say it ain’t so, Joe!
I’ve been lookin’ for tasteful nudes of several female Fox News babes for a long time. Anybody got any?
Just kidding.
(not kidding...email me)
Just kidding, really. 0:)
(sorta)
I think you hit the nail on the head.
“Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by,” Edelman says. “ I find this statement to be somewhat true you know like Tom Daschle giving a speech on tax cheaters on the house floor how not paying your taxes cheats us all. and we all know he is a tax cheater.
Did the credit card statements divulge if the person was conservative or liberal or how they voted if not than you cant use that as a threshold as far as I am concerned. That is like saying everyone in SF is gay and liberal and is in favor of gay marriage that is not true.
Long Dong.
I know. I know. Chickens should be sitting in lots of hot oil, never water, unless it’s with lots of carrots, parsnips, onions and dill.
Saw this posted on DU (yeah, I go there all of the time). Problems:
1) It looks at one particular source of porn revenue and excludes others
2) It assumes that the people buying this porn are conservative because they are in “red states”
I don’t think any reputable statistician would derive the conclusion “conservatives buy more porn” from this data alone. The statistics are too narrow in their range and too broad in their conclusions.
hmm what do you call a noob who posts articles about porn?
I searched “sex” on my browser when I first got Internet in my house, to see what you could get without providing proof of age or a credit card. Well, I easily saw the hardest core porn I’d ever seen in absolutely no time at all. Ok, if I think about it, I’ve seen two worse photos - one at a dumpster at work, one in an alley in SF. Other than that, no contest.
I quickly realized my kids could access the most explicit stuff I could ever imagine without proving their age or paying a thin dime.
So, the computer stays in the main room of the house, and I check the history FREQUENTLY. Also we’ve made clear our attitude towards pornography and the reason we don’t seek it out.
Yeah, right! What facts do they leave out of this article? Who do they think they are fooling? It is hard to find any good news sources these days, as they all have an agenda.
That’s what I wanted to point out.
Consumption is not directly linked to credit card use.
This is a nice try to mislead with a selective statistics, but flawed because it doesn’t show the whole picture.
Since you’re a troll I hope you aren’t wasting any of your time on porn.
Keep both hands on the keyboard.
Diddle with the numbers until you find a way to indict conservatives.
What a shock.
Fixed.
Here you go bringing reason, logic, and science into this. In this new world, you must ‘FEEL’ things. And if from some jumbled set of data you collected feeling around you ‘feel’ you’re coming to a right conclusion, well, it MUST be the case.
I ‘feel’ the author is a total jackass. It must be the case.
Porn shops and fireworks stores are all that’s left on I70 between St. Louis and Kansas city (250 miles). Who owns all those porn shops anyways?
B******t in the USA: Liberals are the biggest producers.
