Limbaugh Rallies Conservatives to Find 'Right Candidate' (Romney wins CPAC straw poll)
Fox News ^ | February 28, 2009

Rush Limbaugh was 15 minutes early to the stage, but no one was complaining Saturday evening in Washington, D.C., at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Quite the contrary. On the conference's third and final day, the conservative talk radio host was the headliner, and the crowd greeted him with an immense ovation.

"Ladies and gentleman, this is my first ever address to the nation," Limbaugh joked, noting that FOX News and C-SPAN were broadcasting the speech live.

Limbaugh then spent his first 15 minutes giving an impassioned summary of what it means to be a conservative before turning the focus to the movement's recent electoral record.

"We can take this country back. All we need is to nominate the right candidate," he said.

The speech was the culmination of an event that featured often fiery speeches by some of top names of the conservative movement and the Republican party, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and conservative commendator Ann Coulter.

As an attendee of CPAC for the past six years, I can assure you Conservative Women are absolutely GORGEOUS. I have has the privilege of meeting many of them.

What makes them even more appealing is they have brains along with beauty, and in my book that is a magnificent combination.

If Rush had a pair, he’d have endorsed a conservative early or asked for conservatives to pick a candidate early in the primaries in 2008 and stuck with the candidate himself. We should pick a candidate early now? Well, no $#!#, Rush! What should we have done in 2008, waited until all the good ones were gone and flail for a conservative among the leftovers like you did?

He’s eventually going to whore himself for Romney like he did in 2008. That’s all this means. And we will lose in 2012 if he does and Romney gets the nod, because even after four years of Obama, conservatives will still not vote for that flip-flopping liberal lite Romney.

I don’t think you get it. No more RINOS, no more Romney. How can you listen to Rush, and then by the same token want to vote for a RINO like Romney? ::shakes head in disbelief::

Why should Rush do the work the candidate can’t do himself?

I have relatives in Upstate NY and my sister-in-law said the guy is a crook just like his fellow Dems. I cracked up because she is a Dem herself although voting more Republican now which was shocking to find out.

I am not disagreeing with you. I worked for McCain and he was not my pick but I couldn’t have made more calls. That ‘purist’ BS drives me up a wall. If I could work for McCain then there wasn’t one reason that any conservative with an ounce of brain about Obama could not have done the same thing. If they are not going to vote for a candidate they agree with part of the time versus one that they never would support, then they have mush for brains and are responsible for what we are seeing right now.

If these ‘purist’ don’t get off their backside this time and if they keep complaining day in and day out then I am not sure they are conservative and certainly not Republicans. Some on here did all they could to trash McCain and split the party. My question was WHY? We did have people that voted for ZERO in a poll on here and I think I have run into everyone of them.

We have got to get our act together and take a lot of seats back in 2010 to stop this runaway train that is ZERO. I am just tired of seeing talk of Presidential politics when the midterms are so important. Limbaugh included in talking about what we need in a Presidential candidate. Get the past the 2010 elections and then tell me about Presidential candidates. Until then the focus should be on the House and Senate IMHO!

“Why should Rush do the work the candidate can’t do himself?”

For the same reason he’s being touted here, he is the self-styled leader of the right now. If he’s claiming to be a leader, well, leaders LEAD. Leaders make a call. They take a stand. Waffling on who the GOP should choose as its standard-bearer is demonstrating that “leadership” is mere puffery. He spent the entire fall of 2008 bitching about HRHTMMLBHObama’s lack of specifics—what does he think a generic statement like “Republicans should choose a conservative” is?

We are a certain amount of what I would call malcontents in the conservative movement. You see the mentality at Liberty Post. They have as little capacity to be happy as liberals.

If Romney is the nominee, we might as well not bother. He neither unite nor inspire Republicans.

As an optimist, those types bug me because frankly I don’t think you can please them with any candidate except someone who cannot get elected. Never have been able to figure out the ‘purist’ when if you don’t get elected you have no agenda. The reason for elections is to WIN! That doesn’t mean sacrificing your core beliefs but it sure does mean that most of us will not get 100% of what we want in a candidate. I am a Ronald Reagan type that I will support a candidate I agree with 80% of the time in the primary and in the general I don’t support Democrats period.

"The guy is a radio actor. He talks on the radio. Let’s not make him into more than he is.

You obviously don't know Rush. Do you really listen to him? Guess not, or you wouldn't make those lame comments.

He has an uncanny ability to understand, and then analyze from a different angle. Or haven't you noticed.

His unwavering principles keep conservatives hopes alive. You can't see that?

He can think on his feet and doesn't need a speechwriter. He is his own man.

But all that is lost on you.

I think it’s a mistake for Conservative statesmen to endorse candidates in a weak field. In my opinion, it’s better that guys like Rush provide unfettered commentary and leave the decision to the listener. The Conservative message is more important than the endorsement. I might tune out if an endorsement was made for the ‘other’ candidate.

Watching for the second time tonight.

Limbaugh, "The United States is the greatest country ever on the face of the earth! Why does the President of the United States want to destroy it?

“Had he and the others spoken out a tad about BUSH- they have reached outside the choir.”

I’m joining YOUR choir—AMEN! If Rush is such a conservative leader, where was he when his leadership could really have helped, say, back during the EARLY 2008 primaries?

I agree with Obama part of the time, like when he says Gonzales v. Raich is stupid policy. Should I vote for him? Oh, wait, I’m supposed to vote for liberals only when they’re on the GOP ticket, right? Forgot, sorry.

Oh, right, he provides such unfettered commentary. With the way he’s toned things down over the years. With the way he bit his tongue over Bush until Hannity started making inroads? Sheesh.

Look, I don’t care if he endorses someone until just before the primaries but not endorsing anyone is simply limp-wristed and not leadership. He’s not the RNC HQ, for God’s sake. Avoiding endorsing is simply avoiding angry callers and avoiding seriously addressing the weaknesses of the other various candidates. In 2008, the guy didn’t step up until it was too late, and we were stuck listening to him tout his stupid rat-cross-voting excitement and endorse...ROMNEY? I know Rush is all about entertainment, but if you listen to him because you think he supports conservative views, why continue to do so when he fails to support them when it is MOST important?
