Professor Called Police After Student Presentation

For CCSU student John Wahlberg, a class presentation on campus violence turned into a confrontation with the campus police due to a complaint by the professor.

On October 3, 2008, Wahlberg and two other classmates prepared to give an oral presentation for a Communication 140 class that was required to discuss a “relevant issue in the media”. Wahlberg and his group chose to discuss school violence due to recent events such as the Virginia Tech shootings that occurred in 2007.

Shortly after his professor, Paula Anderson, filed a complaint with the CCSU Police against her student. During the presentation Wahlberg made the point that if students were permitted to conceal carry guns on campus, the violence could have been stopped earlier in many of these cases. He also touched on the controversial idea of free gun zones on college campuses.

That night at work, Wahlberg received a message stating that the campus police “requested his presence”. Upon entering the police station, the officers began to list off firearms that were registered under his name, and questioned him about where he kept them.

They told Wahlberg that they had received a complaint from his professor that his presentation was making students feel “scared and uncomfortable”.

“I was a bit nervous when I walked into the police station,” Wahlberg said, “but I felt a general sense of disbelief once the officer actually began to list the firearms registered in my name. I was never worried however, because as a law-abiding gun owner, I have a thorough understanding of state gun laws as well as unwavering safety practices.”

Professor Anderson refused to comment directly on the situation and deferred further comment.

“It is also my responsibility as a teacher to protect the well being of our students, and the campus community at all times,” she wrote in a statement submitted to The Recorder. “As such, when deemed necessary because of any perceived risks, I seek guidance and consultation from the Chair of my Department, the Dean and any relevant University officials.”

Wahlberg believes that her complaint was filed without good reason.

“I don’t think that Professor Anderson was justified in calling the CCSU police over a clearly nonthreatening matter. Although the topic of discussion may have made a few individuals uncomfortable, there was no need to label me as a threat,” Wahlberg said in response. “The actions of Professor Anderson made me so uncomfortable, that I didn’t attend several classes. The only appropriate action taken by the Professor was to excuse my absences.”

The university police were unavailable for comment.

“If you can’t talk about the Second Amendment, what happened to the First Amendment?” asked Sara Adler, president of the Riflery and Marksmanship club on campus. “After all, a university campus is a place for the free and open exchange of ideas.”

I have noticed that a few students (not many, but some) are starting to speak up against the very liberal ideas that they are forced to listen to everyday. I hope that this becomes more and more frequent. They need their own advocate group. Something like the ACLU or the NAACP.

Walhberg needs a lawyer, and this prof needs to be sent packing. He was called to the campus police station because he dared use his 1st Amendment rights to affirm his belief in the 2nd Amendment? Either something is missing in this story, or this kid has been railroaded in the worst possible way.

He remarked that all the troubleshooting and repair fell to him since he seemed to be the only one in the program who knew how to use a screwdriver.

That's funny! I was partly running a department assembling industrial machine control panels in a job one time. We got some complaints after the equipment arrived at the customer that a lot of the screws were loose. My boss, the owner of the company, asked me if I showed the wiring guy how to use a screwdriver. I just stood there and stared at him. I couldn't imagine how to respond to a question like that.

There’s more than one conservative professor around, but we are a pretty endangered species.

Does your son really need a degree? I can make more money as a welder, or at several other trades, than I can as a teacher. An awfully large number of trade schools and technical two year degrees can give you a very good education if you take advantage of them.

I actually have talked some students out of the four year degree and into something that made them happy.

What a naive creature that Sara Adler is.

I went to an overwhelmingly Liberal university in the late 80s and early 90s. But even so, free and passionate discussion both in class and out was encouraged. The most Liberal professors on campus graded based on a students ability to back their arguments ... not on what those arguments actually were. I aced a film class taught by a very proud Communist (he showed us his CPUSA card the first day of class) whose father had allegedly been blacklisted in the 1950s, based largely on a term paper where I defended McCarthy and HUAC.

PC showed up on my campus my Junior year. Visiting professor came in from another university, and failed me on my first assignment because I used the masculine in the generic. Big red "SEXIST"s were written all over my paper. I took the matter to the Dean, since the University's own grammar/language guide (St. Martin's Handbook) specifically said that generic use of the masculine was acceptable. He told be to chill out and deal.

Later on in the semester we had a class discussion on slavery. A Jewish girl in the class spoke up that since she'd lost family in the Holocaust she could sympathize with Blacks over slavery. The professor (who was white), went absolutely, raving berserk ... yelling at the student that "the Holocaust was NOTHING compared to slavery".

I should mention at this point a few important things:

* The school was 30-35% Jewish.

* The Jewish population has the lowest % of financial aid recipients of any demographic group.

* Jewish alumni were the second largest set of donors to the university.

* Surveys of alumni donors showed that the single biggest recipient of alumni donations to organizations other than the University was AIPAC.

Our campus Hillel and B'nai B'rith went straight to the university President and had a VERY frank discussion of the situation with him. The Professor's contract was not extended beyond her first year.

I am glad to hear that you had a fair result. I'll bet it would not happen now.

When I was a student there, they gave each IlliCop one bullet. Not to be kept in his gun, by the way.

No, wait--it was a small powder flask, a cap, and a minie ball.

We decided to pick our kids’ universities very carefully. We chose a few conservative Christian colleges in the mid west, and toured them to get a flavor of the campus. When we found a few that consistently turned out kids with their heads screwed on straight, we told our sons they can pick from those.

Yes, they cost more than a large state run liberal university, but we figure we’re not spending our hard earned money to have them brainwashed.

that's before the hippies took control of the colleges

it might be more truthful to say "that's before the Marxist professors took control of the colleges"

I’d like to read the text of the student’s presentation. My guess is he was talking about how to use a lawfully carried firearm to end a threat on campus like the murderous spree at VA Tech. May even have spoken about the better targeting of center mass instead of head shots. THAT would cringe some of the wussy children of liberal pukes infesting the college nowadays.

Stop making fun of Ms. Adler. She may be a naif or simply playing the hand that was dealt with her. She is in a liberal environment and as such her only tool is to shame left from deviation from the principles they falsely claim to support.
