More than 1,000 people braved chilly temperatures downtown today to protest President Barack Obama's stimlulus aprogram and to throw tea into the Mississippi River.

The gathering was organized by several local conservatives. There was no official crowd estimate, but the gathering filled roughly one fourth of the grand staircase from the Arch grounds down to the levee.

Among the speakers was former football Cardinals tight end Jackie Smith, who took a bullhorn and said, "We are mad as hell and we need to stay mad as hell. Don't let up."

Smith asked the crowd if this was their first protest rally, and most raised their hands.

Bill Hennessy, said he got the idea for the tea party from comments made last week by CNBC business commentator Rick Santelli about the stimulus program. Santelli urged people to have another Boston tea party.

Before the crowd went down to the NMississippi River, Hennessy urged everyone to rip open their tea bags and dump the tea without throwing the paper into the river. The group ended the 50-minute rally by lining up on the river's edge and doing as asked.

...the protest WILL grow BIGGER AND LOUDER. The average tax paying red blooded American hasn't found out what's in the PORKULUS scam yet. For those who attended, my sincere Thanks.

Good for St. Louis. I wonder how those rogue prosecutors from St. Louis who threatened to have LE arrest citizens who “told lies” about Obama felt about this tea party...

I’m most impressed at the crowd that showed up in Atlanta - over 300 according to reports.

In the sheeting rain...

Neil Cavuto covered the story this afternoon on Fox News. The Christian Science Monitor and the Atlanta Journal Constitution covered it.

All you have to do is google “tea party.”

Ah Cavuto yes... but doesn’t that mean, that only the Far Right Wing fanatics that hate Obama and wish the country to fail are the only ones actually covering this rebellion and opposing this Stimulus package of aid to the most needy Americans?... So the rest of the media will marginalize this small group of Radical fringe bitter, angry people that have antipathy toward people that aren’t like them (like the jobless and homeless). Yes the real media will only report when there is all this glowing good reviews from people like Henrietta Hughes, and other deserving people that Obama has helped make it through the worst inherited economy in the nations history.

"Rally at the Arch......."

As a veteran freeping freeper, I can state with some modicum of authority that 1000-plus breathing bodies was a great turnout in the face of about 10 reasons of things working against it which can be figured out without burning too much brain fuel.

It's early in the Tea Party game.....the word is getting around like wild fire, the weather will be warming up, etc. etc. and so forth.

Congratulations to the St. Louie organizers and participants in this demonstration......one of the opening shots fired by the common folk against our arch enemies.

Remember the famous "shot heard round the world" fired at the Lexington bridge at the onset of the Revolutionary War?

It served to ignite the fight for freedom.

I remember it 'cause I was there with the MinuteMen.
