More than 1,000 people braved chilly temperatures downtown today to protest President Barack Obama's stimlulus aprogram and to throw tea into the Mississippi River.

The gathering was organized by several local conservatives. There was no official crowd estimate, but the gathering filled roughly one fourth of the grand staircase from the Arch grounds down to the levee.

Among the speakers was former football Cardinals tight end Jackie Smith, who took a bullhorn and said, "We are mad as hell and we need to stay mad as hell. Don't let up."

Smith asked the crowd if this was their first protest rally, and most raised their hands.

Bill Hennessy, said he got the idea for the tea party from comments made last week by CNBC business commentator Rick Santelli about the stimulus program. Santelli urged people to have another Boston tea party.

Before the crowd went down to the NMississippi River, Hennessy urged everyone to rip open their tea bags and dump the tea without throwing the paper into the river. The group ended the 50-minute rally by lining up on the river's edge and doing as asked.

That “Honk if you want to pay my mortgage” sign was mine. (I didn’t see any others with same wording).
We drove two hours and it was cold there but we figured it was well worth a days vacation and the drive.

Neil Cavuto just covered the story. So much for the wet blanket FReepers who said the Drive-By Media wouldn’t cover it.

(Tulsa, OK) - Hundreds of people gathered at Veteran’s Park in Downtown Tulsa on Friday morning for a modern-day “Boston Tea Party” to protest what they believe are runaway earmarks and bad policy in President Barack Obama’s new stimulus package.

That’s right — this has only just begun! We need a little time to build up to huge crowds.

Good news about what happened at that rally!

Re Los Angeles Tea Party today...

How about planning something before July 4? Maybe around Memorial Day or earlier?

Agree that 250 people on an early Friday a.m. at practically a moment’s notice was great — in the Peoples’ Republic of Santa Monica, no less!!! Great turnout — great effort.

If there’s one on a Saturday or Sunday I can definitely attend!

Great turnout at the harbor.

While a large crowd listened to speeches around
200 of us lined a block with signs, flags, etc.
along busy Harbor Dr. and cars were honking support.

There will be pics. posted”

...and this is JUST the beginning!!!!! We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take anymore!!!!!

Tyrants would distribute largess, a bushel of wheat, a gallon of wine, and a sesterce: and then everybody would shamelessly cry, “Long live the King!” The fools did not realize that they were merely recovering a portion of their own property, and that their ruler could not have given them what they were receiving without having first taken it from them. … The mob has always behaved in this way — eagerly open to bribes that cannot be honorably accepted and dissolutely callous to degradation and insult that cannot be honorably endured.

That is not accurate. I'm finding newspaper and TV stories all over about them.

Budget debate launches new tea party

Several thousand neopatriots – some shouting “Give me liberty or give me death!” – took to the streets in over 30 US cities Friday, representing what some of them call the beginning of a new conservative counterculture in America.

“The spark has been lit,” says Ben Mihalski, a “house husband” from Cobb County, Ga., one of at least 300 protesters who gathered in a hefty downpour outside the Georgia Capitol on Friday to protest what they see as profligate spending by Washington.
