More than 1,000 people braved chilly temperatures downtown today to protest President Barack Obama's stimlulus aprogram and to throw tea into the Mississippi River.
The gathering was organized by several local conservatives. There was no official crowd estimate, but the gathering filled roughly one fourth of the grand staircase from the Arch grounds down to the levee.
Among the speakers was former football Cardinals tight end Jackie Smith, who took a bullhorn and said, "We are mad as hell and we need to stay mad as hell. Don't let up."
Smith asked the crowd if this was their first protest rally, and most raised their hands.
Bill Hennessy, said he got the idea for the tea party from comments made last week by CNBC business commentator Rick Santelli about the stimulus program. Santelli urged people to have another Boston tea party.
Before the crowd went down to the NMississippi River, Hennessy urged everyone to rip open their tea bags and dump the tea without throwing the paper into the river. The group ended the 50-minute rally by lining up on the river's edge and doing as asked.

Need to do this late in the day on Friday or Saturday so we can all make it, the people that care are actually the ones working and paying for everything. Most of the O crowd didn’t work
We need to protest next in front of the HQ of NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN and Fox...duel protest...media left slant and Tea Party.
Good job folks. I couldn’t get out of work, but know half a dozen folks that did go down.
In solidarity with all of you out there protesting, I have teabags taped to the entrance of my cubicle. That’s the best I could do considering I still have a job to do.
Regards,
SZ

Yes. I wanted to go down, but I am working to make sure others have their mortgages paid.../s
The local FM talker here had some folks going... So it is not like the word did not get around!
I still that THIS should be our new rallying cry at these Tea Parties:
We need to protest next in front of the HQ of NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN and Fox...duel protest...media left slant and Tea Party.

‘Tampa Tea Party’ Pours Scorn On Stimulus Package
TAMPA - There were no tomahawk-wielding Colonials dumping boxes of English tea into the Hillsborough River, and fortunately, nobody was tarred and feathered.
But the protesters who gathered today on the steps of the federal courthouse in downtown to protest President Obama’s $787 billion economic stimulus bill came with a message similar to their brethren 236 years ago: Take your tea and shove it.
“We wanted to let the people in Washington know how angry we are about the stimulus bill,” said John Hendricks, a Tampa-based consultant who organized the gathering.

Lexington, Concord...and Discovery Green: The Revolution Begins
Inspired by the “Chicago Tea Party” of CNBC fame, right-wingers from coast to coast gathered to protest, um, a bunch of stuff. Creeping socialism, Wall Street, arms control, liberals in general, freeloaders... You name it, these folks are pissed about it. About 300 people (by very rough estimate) turned out to Houston’s tea party, which is ongoing until two on the hill that faces the amphitheater stage in Discovery Green.
Some snarky jackass predicted on his “progressive” political blog that maybe 100 people would show up. Good job, St. Louis!
And this is just the start...

To all, FReepers are AWSOME!
I was there. It was a great start and hopefully we can keep the enthusiasm and momentum going. I talked to several people and they all said it was the first time they had ever been to a protest like that.
