Mitt Romney backs GOP Stimulus Detractors with PAC Money
LA Times ^ | February 24, 2009 | Staff

Today, as ABC's perceptive Rick Klein notes, Romney's PAC -- Free and Strong America -- donated $1,000 each to 11 Republican congressmen targeted in a retaliatory ad campaign by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for voting against President Obama's economic stimulus bill. Romney praised the Republicans as "standing up for fiscal responsibility and saying no to spending abuse."

Strange thing - I am not a Romney supporter. I was not a McCain supporter. I was dissappointed with GWB and his spending. I am a Conservative.

Pseudo Republican agenda? I support a Conservative agenda, I am not a party loyalist but I can see the writing on the all. If we don’t stop biting the heads off our own and start finding the common conservative threads and supporting each other - we will not survive as a Party. If Romney has questionable conservative credentials - it is improbable that he will be a leader or nominee for President - but he can raise money and he has a HUGE following in the Mormom community. Let’s try not to piss him and the millions of Mormoms that share our beliefs off, ok?

“He is a member of the party, whether you like it or not. You have the power to kick him out? I don’t think so.

Reagan would not have spit him out - he was not about knocking the party - he was about improving it. Romney is not the liberal “we’ are making him out to be, but if it makes you feel better to kick him around - continue to do so.”

Romney rejected Goldwater.

Romney rejected Reagan and even registered independent in protest.

In 1993 Romney reregistered as republican and quit giving money to liberal democrat candidates but came our against the Gingrich revolution.

This conservative pro Reagan persona was not adopted until it came time to run for the presidency, Romney was almost 60.

There are plenty of young conservative governors that actually win elections and hold office, it is OK to fight to keep a RINO from defeating actual conservatives.

We don’t need to defend and protect every Crist, Giuliani and Romney type as our best candidate for president on this conservative forum.

Reagan would not have spit him out - he was not about knocking the party - he was about improving it.

Nonsense! See my tagline, Reagan was totally in favor of getting the liberals out of the GOP.

Let's not forget that Ronald Reagan was the first "real candidate" (as opposed to some fringe candidate who never had a chance) in modern times to challenge a SITTING PRESIDENT for the party nomination and he almost won.

Reagan didn't have a problem with Mormons either. In fact, he had so many in his administration, close advisers, etc. It's hard to imagine he would have had any problem with Mitt's faith at all.

“Ronald Reagan's administration included more members of the Church than any other American president, ever. Three of us, David Fischer, Gregory Newell and [Stephen M. Studdert], served on his personal White House staff. Richard Wirthlin was his chief strategist. Ted Bell served as Secretary of Education, Angela Buchanan was Treasurer, Rex Lee was Solicitor General. His White House included Roger Porter, Brent Scowcroft, Richard Beal, Blake Parish, Jon Huntsman Jr., Dodie Borup and Rocky Kuonen, and there were many other Latter-day Saints throughout his Administration.” -Stephen M. Studdert, Special Assistant to President Reagan

I have a feeling Reagan would have had a nice quip about this, and yes he was a gentleman - something I wish would rub off of some in our party. We all need a refresher course in “Party Unity 101.”

I won’t hold George Romney’s transgressions against his son, talk about holding onto grudges.

I completely agree - but I don’t agree that Romney is a Liberal. To me he is a moderate - which is problematic in and of itself - but I don’t think beating the man about the head is the answer. Romney will either tow the line or fall off.

We’re never going to come together if we can’t even agree on a nominee. Tell me. Why would we want to rally around a guy who doesn’t believe in the same things we believe? Who hasn’t demonstrated the same conservatism that others have?

A guy like Romney is not going to bring us together. Period. You can throw a guy on a Republican ticket and call him a conservative, but it doesn’t make it true. Case in point—John McCain. That’s the last time I support a guy because he’s the lesser of two evils. Last time. And I think the majority of conservatives feel the same way.

Romney is not one of our own. He wants you to think he is, but he’s not. He’s as much a fraud as McCain was.

And lastly, stop bringing this Mormon hogwash into it. It has nothing to do with religious beliefs. And if we need him simply to bring Mormons to the table, then it says more about Mormons than anyone else.

Myth's faith isn't the issue, his liberalism is.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Mormons traditionally OPPOSE militant homosexualism and abortion.

I don't recall any conservative Catholics defending Rooty Toot because he was a Catholic, in fact we attacked him just like everyone else.

While I do not believe the tenets of Mormonism, I fully respect their shared moral views. However, Romney does not represent the morals of traditional Mormons and this has often made me wonder if Mormons supported because he is a Mormon just like blacks supported Obama because he is black.

Fine, Mitt was barely military age when he and his father stormed out of the 1964 convention but you ignored Romney’s hate for Reagan and his campaigning as the non Reagan and his refusing to even be a republican during those Reagan years. You also ignore Mitt’s being anti Gingrich and the Contract with America.

Here's the reality, he couldn't even beat John McCain for the GOP nomination, he's finished.

These same folks would have undoubtedly done the same w/ Reagan after his stint as Gov. where he signed into law the abortion bill, raised taxes by over 1 billion, signed into law the “no-fault” divorce law, & then subsequently as POTUS signed the amnesty bill & later backed the Brady bill, among other things.

Some would have had Reagan's head on a platter here. Either they have very selective memories, don't understand politics, or are liberal plants here trying to stir the pot & sow dissension & discord. All three are very plausible possibilities for most of these anti Romney guys. And then of course, there are the bigots. It's a shame that any of these are here on the FR, but it does give a sense of the opposition.

I only ask that if you hate Romney, to be fair, you hate Bush/mcCain worse because it was their bailout.

Yes, I do. Add Gingrich, who also supported the billionaire bailout, to the list. If that is your arguemnt for Romney, it is extremely weak?

Here's a simple ground rule for me: the GOP should restrict its list of qualified presidential candidates to those who opposed the bailout when the chips were down. Romney fails that test out of the box.

Many people said the same about the man whom you quote on your tagline.. after Ford beat him in the primary of 1976.

You might be wrong, we have Romney on tape in a radio interview (off air part)where he is claiming that the Mormon church is not Pro life, he also firmly confirms that he was pro-choice.

Maybe we don’t have that tape I just checked and it was pulled again.

Wait! I found a short piece of the interview better grab it quick.

You are missing my point, and if you had read my posts you would understand that I am not advocating Romney be our nominee for anything. I am saying stop pissing on the guy for raising money and backing conservatives. A little etiquette goes a long way, wasn’t it Reagan’s 11th commandment: “thou shalt not speak ill of fellow Republicans” ? Take a lesson and stop beating our own and save it for the opposition. If we spent half as much time working AGAINST Democrats and Liberals as we did trying to determine who the perfect Conservative is and building our base, we’d be ahead of the game. Romney will fall off, we don’t have to beat him off.

Sorry, I’ve seen religious bigotry from so called conservatives - here and on a variety of other sites. I call it as I see it.
