(WGN-AM) - Mayor Daley once again called on state lawmakers to pass tougher gun laws in Illinois. With support from state lawmakers, aldermen, police and religious leaders, the mayor said it is time for the state to licensing gun dealers in Illinois.
"We think that they should be licensed in the state of Illinois," Daley said. "that's one prerogative the General Assembly has. They license every other profession and they should license this profession as well."
Gun dealers are already registered on the federal level. However, if dealers are licensed at the state level they can prosecuted in state courts.
"When is the last time they've ever prosecuted a gun dealer in America in the federal courts? They should be busy everyday down there," Daley said.
Daley defended, in a way, athletes Michael Vick and Barry Bonds. He said both are examples of misplaced priorities of federal investigators.
"We still have a lot of dogfighting cases in America, every day," Daley said.
"Think of that. Michael Vick? Five years? Basically they could have fined him five, ten, fifteen, twenty million dollars. That would have been better off."
The Mayor is also calling for an assault weapons ban, tougher penalties for gun crimes around schools and public transportation stops and criminal background checks in private gun transactions.
I’m confused here! Aren’t guns already illegal in Chicago? There should be no gun problem if gun laws actually worked.
Hey! Daley! Dealers are already licensed through the Feds, now in addition they will need an Illinois license. Wow! Ain’t the Chicago Way wonderful! Just warms the heart! NOT!
He’d rather talk about this than corruption, because he knows he’s got some huge problems of his own in that area.
there are 350,000,000 people in the US
there are 400,000,000 guns in the US
41% of people admit to owning a gun (gallop survey)
98% of criminals get their guns from the black market
(oppression not intended) NOT a gun dealer.
60,000 people a year buy a gun from a licensed dealer; those dealers turn away 1/2 of 1 percent of those people, or about 300 people.
Dealers sell 4,000,000 guns a year.
Guns are used 2,500,000 times a year in self defense. (6,850 times a day) OR, put another way, 80 TIMES MORE OFTEN to protect, rather than take, a life.

Yet another affront to the US Constitution and the Second Amendment, brought to you by the same corrupt political machine that gave us 0bama, Acorn, and Blago...
Nothing more needs be said.
The letter below (Go, Lewis!) is from yesterday’s Chicago Tribune, which has a record of being anti-gun:
Daleys failing gun laws
February 23, 2009
This is in regards to Mayor Richard Daley’s remark in “Burris questioned in Blagojevich probe,” (Chicagoland, Feb. 22), when he was asked about Sen. Roland Burris and he replied: “Three people got killed [last night]. Do you think the people who killed them care who is their U.S. senator?”
No, Mayor Daley, they do not care. They also do not care that so-called assault weapons are banned both in Chicago and Cook County, actual assault weapons have been severely restricted since 1934. They also do not care that it was illegal for them to own any type of firearm in Illinois without a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card, or that it is illegal to discharge a weapon within the city limits. They also do not care that they most likely are too young to own a firearm by federal statutes. They also do not care that that is illegal to commit murder and the many other laws they surely broke.
This leads me to ask you a question Mayor Daley: If they do not care about breaking the multiple laws that they did, why do you think the solution is to pass yet another law—a ban on so-called assault weapons that they will also ignore?
Mayor, it’s time to admit that your long-time push for tougher and tougher gun laws is simply a failure. It’s way past time that you have the political courage to attack the true causes of violent crime in Chicago: gangs, drugs, poverty and the dismal failure of the Chicago school system, just to name a few.

Indeed! Daley is a professional thug and political hack. Shouldn’t he be licensed?
I think Chicago needs stronger politician-control laws.
This is the tried and true tactic used by despots around the world.
Here's how it goes:
Your idiotic gun laws fail to reduce crime (which surprises nobody with a decent IQ) so you create a fictitious enemy and blame them for your woes.
Castro used this in Cuba when (after the fall of the USSR) the flow of fuel almost completely dried up. Castro promptly told the peasants that the U.S. torpedoed the tankers. When that got old and Castro tried (and failed) to buy bicycles from China he accused the U.S. of bombing the bicycle factory.
Hizzoner Daley is just carrying on the glorious tradition.
And in most cases with no reason. Hairdressers? Please.
My next over-$500 purchase will be a new 38 cal. revolver.
EXACTLY!!!! He is having "I think I am the Governor" moment and wants the whole state to be Chicago.
I to am confused about how there could possibly be gun crimes in the honorable and peaceloving windbag city. Don't all the criminals know that guns are not allowed to be used in crimes? They are illegal in Chicago.
Get a .357Mag. You can still shoot .38 Cal but have a more powerful revolver if the need arises.
Just my .02
Your post is a PR campaign for reasons not to invade America. This makes me happy.
I do have to go and check the sources, however.
Daley: Prefers extortion to prison time for miscreants.
Great letter.
