Program paid $200 to anyone who turned in a gun

New York City officials say 919 guns were collected during a one-day buy-back program at six Queens churches. Watch Video

Nearly 1000 guns were taken off the street in Queens Tuesday.

The program paid $200 to anyone who turned in a gun. A pellet or BB gun was worth $20. The officials say they paid a total of $158,880.

The weekend buy-back results were announced Tuesday by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

Since last summer, similar programs in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island _ plus the Queens effort _ have netted more than 3,500 guns. More than half of them are handguns.

The goal is to reduce crime and tragic accidents.

You can buy a new high point for $125 and sell it to them for $200

Not a bad deal

Living in NYC as a kid, I remember MANY a normally law abiding person had an “illegal” gun just in case.

Some were from relatives who lived out of state, some were from out of state friends who let them “borrow” it just in case.

Im willing to bet that a large number of these types of guns were the ones turned in and not a single criminal turned in a single gun.

Nonsense. A lot of little old lady widows bringing in their late hubbies' guns that were in the bedroom closet. "Off the streets" indeed. Bloomberg, please: kiss my *ss in Macy's window.

I love the way they always describe these as “buy backs” as tho the city owned them originally and are just buying them back.

Hey, it's a good thing they got those BB guns off the street!

That is another of my pet peeves as if they are literally lying around on the streets.

Im willing to bet that a large number of these types of guns were the ones turned in and not a single criminal turned in a single gun.

The primary guns turned in by criminals are either non-functioning things or ones that might blow up in their faces if they tried to use them.

Criminals turning in fully operative weapons on a buy back program means they are trading up.

Yea, at that rate I could “flip” a few cheap guns and earn enough for a new AR in an afternoon.

I wish they’d do something like that around here. :)

My guess is most of these are trash guns worth anywhere from $10 to a hundred. There will always be a few turned in by foolish but well intentioned people which are valuable collectors items.

Only leftists get excited about nonsense like this. I wonder how many $500 Glocks were turned in for $200?
