(02-21) 08:12 PST WASHINGTON, (AP) --
An arrest may be near in the nearly decade-old slaying of federal intern Chandra Levy, whose disappearance in 2001 ended Gary Condit's congressional career, several television stations reported.
The California Democrat was romantically linked to Levy, but was not considered a suspect in her death or disappearance. Television stations, KFSN and KCRA in California and WRC in Washington, D.C., reported that police were seeking an arrest warrant.
Levy's parents said Friday outside their Modesto, Calif., home that police called them and told them an arrest was near.
"Your child is dead and gone and it's painful, but we're glad that the police and people are doing something, and investigating, and making a difference so somebody's not on the street to do it again," Chandra's mother, Susan Levy, told KGO-TV in San Francisco.
The parents did not say when an arrest warrant might be issued.

GRRRREAT news! Thanks for posting.
Does anyone else recall the coverage of a DC 9-11 memorial service where Condit walked towards the camera with a huge grin on his face?
I remember thinking that little **** knows he’s off the front page.
Condit was one of a few Americans who were relieved to see 9/11 happen. The terrorist attacks permanently knocked the Levy story right off of page one, where it ran that whole summer long.
Actually, Condit was a suspect until he was cleared. Also, I you remember, Condit lied and impeded a murder investigation - that is why he lost re-election. He threw out items and gifts lined to Chandra into a garbage bin. Scumbag did not even resign, he had to lose in his primary because his constituents thought it was too much.

Nothing but the best for Congressmen.
Dear Lord... may the real truth be revealed completely!
This is like that Ramsey nonsense.
Condit killed Chandra. This guy will get off soon.
Condit was NEVER cleared.
Please.
Let me get this straight....if the suspected perp is currently in prison and the law is about to make an arrest can they technically re-arrest him or just charge him?
An arrest is someone not currently in prison then...you legal experts chime in on this please.
None of the news articles, except the one you cite state that this perp is an illegal alien. The media isn’t accustomed to pointing that out.
Other older articles do say he is an illegal alien:
Investigators also interviewed Ingmar Guandique, 27, a Salvadoran illegal alien who has denied any involvement in Levys disappearance and killing.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/21/AR2009022100486.html?hpid=topnews
D.C. detectives and prosecutors have been building a case against Ingmar Guandique, a Salvadoran immigrant who attacked two other women in Rock Creek Park around the time of Levy’s disappearance in May 2001. Guandique was convicted in those attacks and is serving a 10-year sentence in federal prison in California. He has denied any involvement in Levy’s death.
Nah you're making it too complicated. He is in jail for other crimes. They can certainly arrest him for this, bring him to court, and go through the whole process for this crime. There is no question of 'bail' of course.
The man, identified by sources as Ingmar Guandeque, is in a federal prison in North Carolina, serving 10 years after pleading guilty to those other assaults. The Federal Bureau of Prisons is responsible for individuals convicted in courts in the District of Columbia.
Guandeque admitted to authorities in both cases that he attempted to steal Sony Walkmans from the women, but he did not take the devices when he had a chance, according to the Justice Department. Police have said a Walkman was found near Levy's remains.
A knife-wielding Guandeque, according to court papers filed at the time of his sentencing, "appears to have used Rock Creek Park as a hunting ground, waiting beside popular running trails, selecting victims and stalking them."
...One of the assaults involving Guandeque, a native of El Salvador, occurred in May 2001 and the second in July 2001.
Levy was last seen in Washington April 30, 2001, shortly after she completed an internship with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. A physical fitness buff, she was known to jog in the park.
Condit looks rather ‘gayish’ or perhaps ‘bi’ in that pic.
