These idiots are trying to KILL the economy. They need to encourage commerce, not destroy it. If this tax goes through, NO ONE will be going ANYWHERE. And GPS to track my every move? NO WAY. What a bunch of dim-bulbed twits.

“panel suggested in December the state start charging motorists a quarter-cent for every mile as a substitute for the gas tax”
B.S.
The average car travels about 15,000 miles a year I believe. A quarter-cent per mile is only $37.50 a year. They have to be collecting far more than that via the gas tax per year per car. Substitute, my you know what...
Our masters keep pushing and pushing... Ever more intrusive, ever more demanding...

If they know how far you drive, then they must also know when and where you drive. If they know mileage and elapsed time, then they know how fast you drove.
At a minimum, this is about automatic tickets and the revenue they produce.
Sure, you will still be able to drive, but you will have Big Brother riding shotgun.

The s0cialist administration is just afraid to raise fuel taxes. Come on 0, just stand up and tell America you will tax everything without limit, and grow government beyond anyone’s wildest imagination.

It would take a decade or more for the feds to get something like this actually operational. GPS and other equipment in every car?
Downloadable information at gas stations? U-huh. Maybe when I'm eighty.
But if. . . and that's a big if.. . this thing ever comes to fruition, the Amish won't be the only ones with a horse and buggy.

Besides a VMT tax, more tolls for highways and bridges and more government partnerships with business to finance transportation projects are other funding options, LaHood, one of two Republicans in President Barack Obama's Cabinet, said in the interview Thursday. This man needs to be tarred-and-feathered and then drummed out of the GOP for life.

Ahhh yes. We all “know” that it wont “replace” anything. It will be just another tax Also now that they have the GPS in your car they will know where and when you drive. It wont be long before we see increased taxes for driving into the city and more taxes if you drive during rush hour and and and. The possibilities are endless.

Among the reasons for the gap is a switch to more fuel-efficient cars and a decrease in driving that many transportation experts believe is related to the economic downturn. Electric cars and alternative-fuel vehicles that don't use gasoline are expected to start penetrating the market in greater numbers.Obviously, the solution is to move away from all these fuel-efficient cars, electric cars and alternative-fuel vehicles and switch to Hummers. Green weenies, your programs are having unintended consequences!
On the other hand, look at the proposed intrusion of government into our cars. Maybe that is the intention from the get go!

Gasoline taxes that for nearly half a century have paid for the federal share of highway and bridge construction can no longer be counted on to raise enough money to keep the nation's transportation system moving, Weasel words highlighted. If the Fed stopped taking gas tax funds to finance mass transit projects & things like bike paths, they'd have plenty of money to maintain & build highways & bridges!
