Doesn’t the United States make anything anymore?
The Buffalo News ^ | 2/17/2009 | Stephen Manning

The U. S. by far remains the world’s leading manufacturer by value of goods produced. It hit a record $1.6 trillion in 2007 — nearly double the $811 billion in 1987. For every $1 of value produced in China’s factories, America generates $2.50.

Baloney, I heard that argument from free traitors way back when...we would make the hard, the important stuff...really then why did the US government award a contract for a military transport plane worth billions and billions to air bus?...manufacturing is in the toilet and this country is paying the price...One Ohio company same one that wrote the Dear GM letter sells only Japanese circuits. A made in Japan stamp is even more likely to be stamped on circuits.

Pitiful is in the eye of the be-holder - just chipping in my 2c worth. I’m sure if I wanted to waste more time, the list would be longer - but, not today.

BTW, the BoT payments figures reflects mostly OIL money going overseas.

You may believe what you will.

Others may have a different view point, it is a free country after all.

Have fun today, they may tax it tomorrow.

Anyone who says American manufacturing is healthy has a political point of view that blinds them to the truth...there is very little manufacturing in this country and it’s ruining the country...the consumption economy is a bad joke.

The trade imbalance with China does not reflect oil...if this continues we will become a dependent pathetic country...also enriching China is a very bad idea...in terms of national security.

take a trip to any store

What are you buying in stores that you think should be made in the US? Besides, most of the equipment used in other countries to make products they send to us is made in the US. (high-grade precision robots, laser cutters, etc.)

I think we should make everything. Why should we have allowed whole industries to be destroyed in this country?...electronics, steel, garments, furniture and now cars...it’s bad for the country. No other country in the world is as stupid as the US...they have trade barriers in place to protect their industry. Free trade is one sided and exists only in the US...we will soon be a joke...can’t even take care of ourselves...in terms of national security, it’s a disaster.

Under our new Saviour Messiah Dictator President we will make the following:

Reparations
Amends
Peace with every nation that will continue to hate and try to destroy us
Excuses

Uh, the initials were unintentional. Unless it hints at what Obama will do to us and our freedoms.

Where will the jobs of the future come from...McDonalds or Walmart? We are losing millions and millions of jobs and have no way to replace these lost jobs with new jobs...we are going to end up with socialism thanks to free trade because all the benefits that used to come with a paycheck are gone...Free trade is the biggest fraud ever perpetrated on this country.

I agree with you, but I am amused by people who say we should take lessons from the Japanese — a country whose economy has been in the toilet for over a decade. :)

Of course after 8 years of Obamanomics, we’ll wish we were living in Japan.

I think we should make everything.

Why? There is a ton of crap I have zero desire to be made here. If I can get a good pair of blue jeans stitched together by someone in Thailand or China, does that really hurt me? Especially if we're the ones making the sewing machines and programs that actually do the work?

No other country in the world is as stupid as the US...they have trade barriers in place to protect their industry.

Who? I don't see trade barriers in other countries. Most of them subsidize their industries - I certainly don't advocate that.

can’t even take care of ourselves...in terms of national security, it’s a disaster.

What basics are we missing that leave us vulnerable, other than oil? We have food, guns, ammo, aircraft, ships, pharmaceuticals...

Besides, explain to me what the British, French, Italians and Germans make that we don’t? You know, since they are some of the largest world economies?

“And you know what? If we were smart, we’d make even more of our own goods. AND it wouldn’t be that hard to make happen. Now you’re saying “wait just a minute.” Well, here’s my plan - we don’t put Buy American into legislation and get into trouble with our trading partners. We take a lesson from the Japanese. Huh? you say? Well, here it is... It is too expensive to manufacture many goods in the US. That doesn’t have to be so, because while American workers are expensive relative to some others, we are VERY productive. So, marginal improvements in the legal and tax environment can bring big increases in our manufacturing sector. More jobs for Americans, and a better balance of trade. Here’s a couple of suggestions to help US manufacturing (and no it’s not an “industrial policy” with all the baggage that entails). 1) Cut the corporate tax rate in half. Pay for the cut with reductions in government programs. 2) Repeal Sarbannes-Oxley. It didn’t stop the bubble nor prevent Madoff, it’s a worthless job killer, 3) Repeal every OSHA regulation passed in the last 5 years, and maybe make that in the last 10. No we don’t want people killed at work, but you have to admit we’ve gone overboard. 4) Admit that Anthropogenic Global Warming is a scam. And that description is being kind. Don’t participate in ANY multilateral agreements to “stop global warming.” Deal with consequences if it actually does happen. Prevention is way too expensive. 5) No bailouts, just bankruptcy. It will kill the unions, and it should. They’ve murdered several of our industries so fair is fair. 6) Drill here, drill now. And so on...

bump!!

We make more steel than ever. But we make it now with the mini-mills which are very flexible in what they can make. However, that also means that a hundred workers can do what used to take 10,000 workers to do.

Garments?? Textiles have always followed the path to the cheapest labor. Even now textiles are fleeing Asian labor costs for parts of Africa. In a few more decades, I would guess that Africa will then lose their textile industry to robotics as it gets cheap enough.

No matter, you should be happy with the current govt. It’s pretty much a guarantee that they’ll repeat the joys of the 30’s and launch a trade war. The law of comparative advantage is the least understood economic concept and it’s why humanity repeatedly shoots itself in the foot on economic matters.

And where we used to be the source of great swing music and jazz, now our primary musical export is gangsta rap.
