After an intense partisan debate over the newly passed $787 billion economic stimulus bill, Republicans and Democrats remain almost even in this weeks edition of the Generic Congressional Ballot.
Rasmussen Reports national telephone surveys found that 41% of voters said they would vote for their districts Democratic candidate while 39% said they would choose the Republican.(see crosstabs). Voters are also evenly divided as to whether they are more likely to vote for a candidate who supported the stimulus plan.
Support for the Democrats increased by one point this week, while support for the GOP remained unchanged.
Last weeks results showed the closest match-up between the parties since 2005.
Over the past year, Democratic support has ranged from a low of 40% to a high of 50%. In that same time period, Republicans have been preferred by 34% to 41% of voters nationwide.

Other survey data shows a decided lack of confidence in Congress. Most voters say that the legislators are doing a poor job. By a two-to-one margin, voters say that no matter how bad things are, Congress can make them worse.
On the generic ballot, men are more evenly divided this week, favoring the GOP by a 41% to 39% margin while women favor the Democratic Party 44% to 37%.
White voters still favor the GOP, 45% to 36%, while black voters heavily favor Barack Obamas party by a 73% to 14% margin.
Among investors, 44% say they would chose their GOP candidate, while 36% would vote Democratic. Non-investors prefer Democrats by a 50% to 30% margin.
The noninvestors often don't show up to vote while investors are usually smart enough to find the polling booth.
Now, if only we could win over women, we'd never lose an election...

Totally. After all this that Democrats are not down 20 points is a testament to the hard work of the corrupt MSM.
I win over women all the time. Put me in charge of the GOP ;)
On a more serious, and positive note, as grotesque as this pork bill is, these Dem overreaches are also an opportunity to bring the GOP back to its fiscally responsible roots, and capture disaffected centrist, libertarian, and most importantly conservative votes in 2010 and 2012.
It could be a renewal of the Reagan coalition, *if* the GOP can find someone to give the party a voice.
In 2010, conservative candidates, for the U.S. Senate and House, should campaign together, similarly to the Contract with America. They should promise that, if Republicans regain control of both houses of Congress, theyll pass a set of about five bills, including cutting tax rates to the 1988 rates, obeying the 10th Amendment (which includes repealing all federal laws that mention abortion and spending that isnt mentioned in the Constitution), and building a brick wall along the Mexican border. This month, many people celebrated the 200th anniversary of Lincolns birth. That month would be the perfect time to recruit more conservative candidates, into the republican party.
The people, they have short memories.
Actually, Republicans were no better than even in 1994 and won more than 50 seats.
“Totally. After all this that Democrats are not down 20 points is a testament to the hard work of the corrupt MSM.”
Yeah, but its a lot easier for the crappy biased MSM to tear down a good Republican than to keep a crappy Democrat who’s failing to do his job from getting bad ratings.
This is why the polls are improving. The Democrats are utter contemptible failures and they deserve to be fired en masse.
Strike even and we should gain about 40 seats, from about 275 seats to 215. It would be sweet to depose Pelosi. A long wait though.
Right now, President Camacho would be an improvement.
> black voters heavily favor Barack Obamas party by a 73% to 14% margin
Is this real? If Democrats get just 73% of the black vote in the next election it should be a Republican landslide.

Problem is that after the takeover of the internet, the fairness doctrine, nationalization of all media polling may well become illegal. Once they pass open ballots for unions they will extend that to national elections. Their argument will be that your neighbor has a right to know how his neighbors vote. It will be hailed by the MSM as an advancement of democracy. God help you if you vote anything other than a “progressive” candidate.
Support for the Democrats increased by one point this week, while support for the GOP remained unchanged.
I can almost feel it, in the air, tonight...
Call me a bit optimistic, but this is how it could all shake out.
The stimulus package passes and most people are not happy with it. Over the next 6 months, the Dow remains more or less flat, or tumbles a bit more, with some really bad days and some really good ones. Some efforts at bank nationalization occur, but not complete, as by year-end, it’s very clear what banks will survive and what will not, and the consumer starts showing his preference by where accounts are being opened and where they are being closed.
However, despite all the Dems (and spineless Republicans’) efforts to the contrary, the economy shows some signs of life by Q3 2009, as it always does, it’s starting to recover. Starting with the real estate market leveling off and sales starting to tick upwards, just a little. Bank stocks of banks that are well-capitalized and still profitable begin to recover.
In 2010, although things are slowly looking better, unemployment is still slowly rising, or at least hasn’t yet dropped. In addition, people are getting nervous about the mounting budget deficits and mammoth spending going on.
The GOP launches a Contract With America II that helps them gain 43 seats in 2010 in the House, and retaking a narrow majority. The Senate remains in Dem hands but the GOP picks up 3.
Meaningless. The only ballot that counted was on Nov. 4, 2008, a day that made the American sheeple very happy.
