Chuck Todd has asserted that the United States is going “to have to figure out how to give the Taliban a role somewhere in Afghanistan if we’re going to get out of there without it looking like a failure.”
Todd, NBC’s Chief White House correspondent and political director, was reacting to a report that the government of Pakistan has reached a deal with the Taliban regarding the northern Swat region of Pakistan, and suggested something similar could be in the offing in Afghanistan.
CHUCK TODD: I want to go to this Pakistan deal with the Taliban. I think this is foreshadowing something. We’re going to have to figure out how to give the Taliban a role somewhere in Afghanistan if we’re going to get out of there without it looking like a failure. If we make eliminating Taliban the goal, we will be in Afghanistan for decades. Not years, decades.

So wait a second, I thought Afghanistan was “the good war”, or at least “the war we can somewhat tolerate”, the prosecution of which Obama said we needed and ran on in the campaign. Now he’s going to cut and run from there, too?

Todd is the covert advance man for the new OBAMA foreign policy intiative in Afghanistan.

For the self-absorbed and cowardly professional political class, routien and reflexive appeasement is SO much easier than the hard decisions of recognizing and dealing with our enemies.
Of course, they are ruling an America with values that I no longer recognize.
Todd’s detachment from reality is quite stunning....

He may be right. We have to remember however that the Taliban isn’t some monolithic central organization. The Afghans are Tribal people and most of the tribes don’t like each other. We could deal individually with Tribal Chieftans and negotiate deals to purchase their Poppy Crops and offer them some kind of autonomy to run their tribes. They wont run them the way we would like and yes women will continue to be oppressed as they have been for thousands of years. For us to change that though would probably take a presence of a half million troops to secure every village in the country. That just isn’t going to happen.
