The Senior Senator from Maine.
I see John Bricker lived into his 90’s. Too bad he was a ‘58 victim.
Hoover actually sent money in 32 to the states who actually didn’t believe in helping people anymore than he did (moral hazard)...Hoover Dam came out of this last ditch effort...it was too little to late. Hoover also turned the army on war veterans in 32. This cost him votes. Roosevelt promised to restore prosperity- a chicken in every pot and so on. Hoover was seen as throwing money at business including the banks while allowing massive suffering among average Americans...it took 20 years before the American electorate was willing to take a chance on a Repub...Eisenhower-war hero.
I’m hoping that 2012 takes care of itself. If the first weeks are any indication, a dead flounder can beat Obama in 2012 . . . but we’ll see how much he can “jimmy” the vote by then.
I gave you a range...as is reported. No one really knows how many died between 1929 and 1932, but many did. How can you not consider that the unemployment rate rose to 25 % in a time where there were no social programs and not admit people died...both of malnutrition, exposure (hard to keep warm in Hoovervilles) and treatable illness (no money for doctors. It’s common sense. I have read statistics that range from seven million to 26 million...I imply nothing...people did die. We may never know the exact figure.
How many died during the depression?
wiki.answers.com 7 million Industrial (city), 5 million rural, particularly farmers. When the unemployment rate rose to over 19%, within a year it’s estimated a combined total of between 12 and 15 million Americans died from starvation.
I see your point, it’s also a political issue.
mistype...should be 16 million not 26 million.
Yes we do. It was roughly 1.3 million a year ---- 5.2 million in TOTAL! However, 7-15 million Americans DID NOT die from 1929-1932 because of the Great Depresssion or from Hoover's policies. Stop spreading falsehoods!
Don't count on some internet website to tell you the truth. I suggest you take a class in statistics, along with one in history and one in commonsense. If you had taken the time to look at the link I supplied, cdc.gov, you would have learned something. The level of deaths in America during the Great Depression was consistent with average growth of the US population. There were no significant spikes. There was a total of 15 million deaths overall in the US during the period 1929-1939. That covers almost the entire Great Depression.
When you compare that to the period of the 1918 flu pandemic, you see a siginificant spike in the level of deaths in the US population. The 1918 flu pandemic killed millions world wide and about 500,000 in the US alone.
Facts are our friends, but only if used correctly.
Makes sense, what’s so different about the depression that sets it apart from past recessions, the government response is what was different.
FDR has achieved personal popularity, open seat races in 1940 or 1944 would have probably been Republican wins. And of course Dewey ran a fantastically poor laurel resting campaign in 1948 and was embarrassed by Truman.
Yeah, and I just wanted to be an Asian Porn Star named Well Hung. It's nice to have goals.
"I still can't believe Hill was elected in NY. And that NY rats were cool with it and stepped aside for her."
I can't believe Rick Lazio lost.
"In an alternate universe she's still a Goldwater conservative"
Absent the college brainwashing, there'd have been a LOT of Republicans that wouldn't have been turned into Stalinist rodent zombies. Not only Hillary, but Donna Sha-la-la and (shudder) even John Kerry. Bubba, of course, was always a slick, corrupt Southern rodent.
"Connie Morella 22. I wonder if she came out for Berry. Google's got nothing."
I don't know. She had an ambassadorship under Dubya, so she might've stuck with McCain.
"That won't do you any good, I'll just hurl the brick at a downward angle. :-d"
Well, you did say she was packing heat... just not what kind.
The guy that beat Bricker, Stephen Young, was a Socialist moonbat who was in elective office on and off for 60 years (1913-1971). The execrable Howard Metzenbaum was a disciple of his. He would’ve been a one-term fluke had he not been carried to a 2nd term by the anti-Goldwater landslide (even at that, Young only beat Bob Taft, Jr. by less than 17,000 votes (they tied 50-50%)). Young lived to be 95 (and got to see Metzenbaum take his seat, albeit 6 years after he intended him to).
Wikipedia, now there's a great source for factual data (that's sarcasm, btw). Madam, I don't know how you can continue to post such total FALSEHOODS and 100% pure unadulterated Democrat/Leftist propaganda. It's so outrageous and ludicrous that it doesn't pass the smell test. 15 million didn't starve to death under Hoover. That is more the reality in Soviet Russia where those in rural areas were DELIBERATELY starved to death by Stalin. How can you, as a former teacher, continue to willfully propagate such debunked lies ? But you remind me of how FDR and the Democrats were able to win and hold onto power for years on end. They repeat lies such as what you've stated and report them as facts. You hear a lie enough times and it becomes truth. The Democrat party was constructed on a mountain of lies and criminality, by deceiving the people and making slaves of the population and exploiting their ignorance of truth.
There are other sources...It is common sense...between 1929 and 1933, the unemployment rose to 25% from about 4%, this does not even consider the farm workers. There were no social programs...we know for sure that people were tossed out of their homes, there are pictures of the Hoovervilles, there are the stories of the survivors as well. There is no doubt that people died of starvation as well as other depression related reasons...what did you think it was a Walton rerun? There are three men in a two block radius of where I live who have killed themselves in the last two months...they lost their jobs...two worked at Delphi. I don’t about the third. Tough economic times have consequences. Whitewashing history is never a good idea.
True-personal popularity will go a long way in an election.
Pretty funny...I took many classes in statistics. How about a link to your figures?
Highly doubtful.
>>>>>How about a link to your figures?
Still not paying attention. My post to you at #376 gives you a pdf link. I also mentioned your inattentiveness at #387. If you want to debate, get your facts straight and stop creating falsehoods.
Please, if you were so knowledgeable about statistics, you would know that such statistics from the 1930’s are not accurate as people lived and died at home or on the road often without benefit of a birth certificate or a death certificate. This is why we will never know how many perished in the great depression specifically between 1929 and 1933, when Roosevelt sent help to ordinary Americans.
In fact, those at most risk would not have been counted as many were on the move after the dust bowl and losing their homes. If you believe that no one died during the depression via hunger or other depression related ways, then you are incorrect and your opinion is unreasonable...based on ideology rather than logic.
This is not a partisan issue. History is what it is...Hoover’s policies worsened the economic crisis...particularly the fed policy and many believe Smoot-Hawley (I don’t). Roosevelt lowered the unemployment rate significantly (those figures don’t even count the WPA and CCC jobs as well as other ‘government’ employment) and kept people going. It was 20 years before Americans took a change on a GOP president.
That isn't the real issue, however. For anyone with an iota of commonsense this is simple to understand.
You posted that 7-15 million Americans died during the Great Depression from "starvation". That is a massive number and one you can't back up with any substantive factual accounts, and for good reason. Its simply not true.
There were a grand total of some 15 million deaths from 1929-1939. While not perfect, the CDC statistics I supplied you a link to, are the most comprehensive facts on the historic record. They clearly indicate the spike in deaths from the 1918 flu pandemic. There is no reason to doubt their general reliability factor in this case.
There was massive poverty, unemployment, malnutrition and chronic illness related to poor medical health care in America, during the Great Depression. However, the history written about the 1930`s says nothing about 7-15 million deaths from starvation related to the Great Depression or the policies of President Hoover.
My Mother and Father, Grandparents, Uncles and Aunts lived as adults during the First World War, the 1918 flu pandemic, the Roaring 20's, the Great Depression and WWII. They never said anything about people dying from starvation. They did say that people were hungry. But nothing about 7-15 million people dying. My Mother came from rural coal mining Johnstown Pennsylvania and my Dad from urban NYCity. I heard about the details of the Great Depression my entire childhood. Nothing was ever written about 7-15 million Americans dead from starvation.
The policies of FDR's New Deal were an utter failure and actually made the Great Depression last longer then it should have. His tax increases in 1936 drove up unemployment and ended what had been a short period of economic recovery. GDP didn't rebound until the US got involved in WWII.
You need to do your homework and then come back if you want to engage in intelligent and serious debate on FRee Republic. Right now, you're just embarrassing yourself.
You want to believe this...go ahead...let’s see people who live in a city and can’t grow anything...no jobs and no food...I’m sure they were just fine.
That has got to be the most empty headed reply I've received in quite some time. Again, stop spreading lies!
There is absolutely no evidence, not one scintilla of truth to the blatant falsehoods you've posted on this thread. There was no 7-15 million people who died in America from starvation because of Hoover policies during the Great Depression.
