You are right. I don’t know how people can’t see this. They act like no states (except their state matters). They are wrong. As for being lectured by a Virginian (I’m from Virginia-my family lived there for more than 300 years) about the ‘South’-give me a break. There are two Dem Senators in Virginia...take the plank out of your eye my friend. Ohio still has one GOP Senator who voted against the stimulus package. Virginia cast to votes for stimulus.

Your big tent McCain did so well. You RINO's got your man and he got smoked. Why don't you shut up and let the party go back to it's base. Go away. No more RINO's.

Great idea, because that RINO “moderate” DeWine sure did spectacularly in 2006.

Well, just looking at the numbers and recent election results, both VA and OH are trending liberal. In OH the 'Rats essentially kicked all 'Pubs out of state offices in '06. In '08, Obombah outperformed Kerry in '04 by almost 200,000 votes and 3 percentage points. For a Presidential contest, at least compared to recent elections, it wasn't even close.

The electorate in VA gave the boot to a TrueconservativeTM (Allen) in favor of an ersatz moderate 'Rat (Webb). They've elected 'Rat governors for two elections running, and the 'Rat candidate for Senate the last election absolutely stomped and thoroughly thrashed to death the through-and-through TrueconservativeTM 'Pub candidate, blowing him out of the water by over 30 points.

You just can't spun those kind of results away. They mean something, and people have to have the courage to see the reality of what we face. We'd better wake up and smell the coffee, or risk being relegated to the status of the Constitution Party or some other irrelevant political group.

You can become like the buggery party, I will stay true to my convictions. Seems like when the going gets tough your true colors show, RINO.

You are preaching to the choir...when you bring it up...you get name calling and denial in return. I don’t see now anyone can look at the 2006 and 2008 elections and believe ‘a true conservative’ can win the presidency or even governorships and congress (state and national) in some of these states.

It is not lost on the Mid West, how the South feels about them, (We had Shelby and Corker quotes for days in every paper about autos) if you run Sanford or any other Southerner, you will lose the entire Mid West...all this bashing of Ohio, Indiana and Michigan by true believers won’t help conservatives or the GOP one bit.

Just give up and join the DEMS, come on just do it. For now there is no RINO party - yet. How could you stand to be in a party that has somebody like me in it? Why would you want that? You are ashamed of me right? I am a red neck loser in fly over country, we can't have anything in common.

I think we are all stuck with her until 2012. Some insiders tell me that she has some real physical problems. This might be her last term.

I personally think that the current Governor of Maine, John Baldacci, might make a go for the seat. He is out in 2010, and with his various government pensions, he is in a great position to campaign for the seat.

He is quite unpopular, and won re-election with only 38% of the vote because a faux independent ran and screwed up the race of the Republican.

DeWine lost because conservative Republicans didn’t support him and some nasty GOP scandals in Ohio...and Sen. Brown is so much better right? The stimulus went through with one vote...Browns. Voinivich didn’t support the stimulus...doubt DeWine would have either, but Brown did. I guess those conservative Ohioans who didn’t vote for DeWine...were really smart right? We are so much better off with Brown?

“DeWine lost his third-term re-election bid in 2006, amid Republican scandals not of his making and a state ready for a partisan change in Washington. But DeWine also battled conservatives’ criticism that he was too moderate and too easily made deals with the likes of Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Sound familiar? One thing that outraged conservatives about DeWine was his joining with McCain in the bipartisan “Gang of 14” senators trying to forge a compromise on President Bush’s judicial nominees.

GOP conservatives helped chop down DeWine, though Democrat Sherrod Brown ran a good campaign and DeWine argues it was a race no Republican could win that year.”

It remains my belief that conservatives can still win elections if they run candidates with a broad appeal. The candidate has to appeal not only to the hardcore base, but to voters beyond the base. That is what it takes to win a national campaign, or even statewide campaigns in those states where the electorate is board and diverse. It's been done, history proves that.

The electorate today is trending liberal, but liberals are not the majority. Neither are conservatives. A winning candidate will build a coalition majority. Our job is to find candidates with conservative principles who will appeal not just to conservatives, but others, enough to win a majority. Winning the 30% or so base is a start and something to build on, but it won't win elections by itself. Reagan was able to win majorities in '80 and '84 with a combination of principled positions and personal appeal. Nixon won a huge victory in '72 by showing himself to be the more reasonable alternative to a candidate whose positions were extreme and was not personally appealing (in spite of the fact that Nixon wasn't, either). Maybe someone in the current GOP Senate ranks can take up the cause. We'll see.

"In OH the 'Rats essentially kicked all 'Pubs out of state offices in '06."

Incorrect. Only DeWine was kicked out. For the statewide offices, excluding judicial, ALL of them were open seats. The Dems lucked out with sweeping all but one (Auditor).

"The electorate in VA gave the boot to a TrueconservativeTM (Allen) in favor of an ersatz moderate 'Rat (Webb). They've elected 'Rat governors for two elections running, and the 'Rat candidate for Senate the last election absolutely stomped and thoroughly thrashed to death the through-and-through TrueconservativeTM 'Pub candidate, blowing him out of the water by over 30 points."

Simplistic analysis. Allen ran a poor race and got in trouble over that ludicrously overblown "macaca" comment (all the while the psychotic Socialist Webb was given a pass by his open Jew-baiting in both the Dem primary and general, nevermind all his other odious problems). As for the Gov's race, the '01 contest we lost because of a bitter internecine GOP primary that saw the loser's people go over to the rodent (Mark Warner). The Dems won again in '05 because of a poor campaign on behalf of our nominee and the inexplicable popularity of the incumbent that got his Lieutenant his "2nd" term. The blowout by Warner of his predecessor Gilmore was partly due to the fact that even with Gilmore, this seat wasn't seriously contested.

I might remind you that the 1980s saw a similar winning streak for the Democrats when they won THREE Gubernatorial elections in a row (1981; 1985; 1989) and in 1988 the GOP Senate incumbent fled his seat rather than face a popular Democrat ex-Governor named Robb (and the GOP nominee lost by as wide a margin as Gilmore). The Dems have a bigger problem this year in VA with the Governorship with at least three candidates running, promising a very ugly primary. The GOP has already settled on a candidate, the sitting Attorney General, who leads ALL the Democrats in face-to-face matchups. I think the Democrat winning streak is about to come to an end in VA.

You know nothing about this issue...all your insults demonstrate why the GOP is losing the Mid West. Call me names all you want if it makes you feel good, better then facing the truth right? Personally, I am interested in taking back the majority...I hate being in the minority and watching the country move left...you are interested in talk, talk, talk...not helpful. As much as you hate the Mid West, they hate the South right now...being Southern I have had pointed remarks made to me about certain big mouthed Senators and Governors who should just shut up.

There is the conservative myth...we must find a conservative who is a perfect conservative...then all will be well...it’s not that simple. If you took the time to look around you and think about things instead of knee jerk insults, you might develop a better understanding of our situation and perhaps come up with useful solutions.
