BRITISH and French nuclear submarines which collided deep under the Atlantic could have sunk or released deadly radioactivity, it emerged last night. The Royal Navys HMS Vanguard and the French Navys Le Triomphant are both nuclear powered and were carrying nuke missiles.
Between them they had around 250 sailors on board.

I really don't see this as a comedy thread. What is with all the jokes and the LOLs! Some decent and brave men may be injured, maimed, or dying. Xenophobia

The British Sub had its blinker on for miles and miles...
When the French Sub finally decided to pass, it went to the left. Oops...

When something bad happens underwater, I first think of the USS Thresher. Plunged below crush depth and it and the crew were spread out like jelly on bread.
I guess in this case they both blew ballast tanks and popped to the surface.
Please, no jokes. The crews are safe, thank G-d.

SWE,
Good post ... the Brit sub was a boomer (missile boat) ... and possibly the "bait" if they suspected that a ChiCom or Soviet attack-class was trying to follow them ...
Then ... the French boat was assigned to follow and track the enemy sub ...
On the other hand ... not to sound corny ... but perhaps the Brit (boomer) was trying a Mad Ivan on the French boat ... in some kind of war game exercise ... and things got too close and they collided ...
However, I suspect that most of the story's details are highly classified at this point, and even publicly released "damage accounts" are ficticious ... which renders "any" civilian analysis an almost complete waste of time ...

But modern anti-sonar technology is so good it is possible neither boat saw the other. Opps. Need another technology it seems.

I have a hunch that a good part of the reason they didn't detect each other is that they both cruising extremely slow (i.e. quiet). That's what boomers do. Slow speed would also lessen the damage of any collision. This howling about nuclear disaster at sea is just tabloid journalism. This is from The Sun after all.
To: SoftwareEngineer
...If I go into full conspiracy mode right now, I think that the French and British subs were participating JOINTLY against a common threat (Chinese subs in the Altantic?) and this is the result of that interaction. The question is if this is what happened to the British and French boats what do you think happened to the oppposing boat.
I think "Chicken of the Sea" is played underwater by bumping the other guys to make them back off.
Could have been they were working together to bump a Commie sub or even each of them a different Commie sub and came up with the story that the British and French subs bunped each other by accident...
