BRITISH and French nuclear submarines which collided deep under the Atlantic could have sunk or released deadly radioactivity, it emerged last night. The Royal Navys HMS Vanguard and the French Navys Le Triomphant are both nuclear powered and were carrying nuke missiles.
Between them they had around 250 sailors on board.

I’m getting a visual of Peter Sellers’ Inspector Closeau and something along the lines of: “Your chocolate is in my peanut butter!”
I was in the military over there for a short period of time, my first day back to the states I drove over to one of my relatives place about 20 miles away. I was mentally attune to drive on the right side again. Got there and back home Ok but then decided to go down to the corner store and get some beer so I jump in my parents car and drove down to it and back on the left side. I didn't realize what I had done to I got back home, Fortunately the store was only a 1/4mile away and no body was coming either way. That the only problem I had problems readjusting, except it took me a week to back out of the drive way onto the right side of the road, kind of weird to break that habit.
Not for these guys. They are boomers, nuclear missile submarines. Their job is to make like a hole in the water, waiting for the command they all hope will never come.
If they turned that stuff off, not there likely is any "stuff" other than good design, then the bad guys could locate them and take them out, then attack their countries.
No boomers don't use active sonar. IOW, they don't transmit. Might as well surface and start a fire in a barrel on the deck.
Your post makes the best sense, it’s unlikely any two boats would be able to make it to the surface if they were both going flank or anything close to it, and hit each other.
Even 20 knots under the ocean in a head on crash would likely leave both boats with damage so extensive that it becomes unlikely one would make it to surface.
My first thought as well. But given that *both* are boomers, I sort of doubt it. They only operate with other subs if those others are attack subs and are guarding them.
If this is true, God rest the souls of each and every one
who perished.
There were no injuries, LUV W.
Thanks, I understand your meaning now.
Thank you for that information. Did they really collapse? I didn’t read all the posts.
collapse=collide
*sigh*
They really did.
One sub “limped” home and one sub was towed back home.
What a relief! It could have been a real disaster and tragedy!
Hope there were no nuke leaks.
[runs to Costco to buy large size Reynolds aluminum foil]
Holy crap! They couldn’t “see” each other?
Doesn’t matter, because of this the Brits will knee-jerk ban submarines.
Here’s one for the submariners.

What the hell is a submarine rollout anyway?
btt
If there was a third boat my guess it was a Russian. They have been aggressive of late.
That’s what I wondered. Are they legally prevented from hurting the eardrums of whales, like we are?
