Orchard Park police are investigating a particularly gruesome killing, the beheading of a woman, after her husband -- an influential member of the local Muslim community -- reported her death to police Thursday.

Police identified the victim as Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37. Detectives have charged her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, with second-degree murder.

"He came to the police station at 6:20 p.m. [Thursday] and told us that she was dead," Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz said late this morning.

Muzzammil Hassan told police that his wife was at his business, Bridges TV, on Thorn Avenue in the village. Officers went to that location and discovered her body.

Muzzammil Hassan is the founder and chief executive officer of Bridges TV, which he launched in 2004, amid hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light.

the defendant acted in an especially cruel and wanton manner pursuant to a course of conduct intended to inflict and inflicting torture upon the victim prior to the victim’s death. As used in this subparagraph, “torture” means the intentional and depraved infliction of extreme physical pain; “depraved” means the defendant relished the infliction of extreme physical pain upon the victim evidencing debasement or perversion or that the defendant evidenced a sense of pleasure in the infliction of extreme physical pain; or

Sawing off her head would seem to fit this definition, unless he killed her first and then started the decapitation procedure.

Now that just makes me want to cry. Putting the human face on this story makes it all the worse. My prayers go out for God to be merciful to this poor soul who was trying to get out of that marriage.

Good point Lurkin. The most dangerous time for a victim of domestic violence is when she (most are women of course) decides to leave. It is truly tragic.

Send a little note in your get-well card to Ted Kennedy in his waning hours on this earth...

“Thank you Teddy for sponsoring the Hart-Cellar Act of 1965 which effectively has reduced the quality of life for all Americans ever since.”

Will the US-Islamic World Forum create a new way forward?

Snippets: Participant Haroon Moghul summarized the atmosphere of that meeting: “There was a feeling that the relationship between the Muslim world and the U.S. is perhaps the most important relationship.” Moghul added that with U.S. President Barack Obama now in office, he sees real potential for change.

In a recorded interview, Dalia Magahed, a member of the U.S.-Muslim Engagement Project and director of the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies, told NPR’s Fred Anderle that she felt President Obama’s inaugural address was consistent with recommendations of the center’s own report. Magahed said, “It’s time to look at Muslims around the world as partners in solving the world’s problems."

Obama conducted his first postinauguration TV interview with Arabic TV Network Al-Arabiya. His core message: “Americans are not your enemy.”

Responding to the President’s interview, Hatem al-Kurdi, 35, a Gaza City engineer, told The Associated Press, “I can’t be optimistic until I see something tangible. Anyone can say nice words, but you have to follow with actions.”

They do sometimes seem to torture kidnap victims before killing them and sawing their heads off. But I think the usual procedure in an honor killing, which I assume this is, is to kill them first in the most convenient way, and then saw off their heads.

I don’t remember the dates when they changed it, but it was after a series of cop killings, maybe thirty years or so ago. They don’t normally have the death penalty anyway, so what they call Second Degree Murder really means First Degree by most standards. They didn’t change the rules for premeditated murder, but just tried to make cop killing a worse offense.

Sigh. My NY property is down 32.8% in value. Perhaps I should sell it to a NY cop, since they have special protections in law.

“Muzzammil Hassan...hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light.”

But Reality just keeps breaking through, doesn’t it Muzzammil?

Well, I must admit that I think that killing a cop or a prison guard is very bad, but I also think that killing a baby or beheading your wife is worse.

In NY State, unless they’ve changed it, first degree is killing a law officer and Second Degree is premeditated murder of anyone else.

In almost all cases, it is NOT premeditated. In order to prove first degree, they have to show the premeditation.

On another subject, have you seen that Obama takes Friday “off” with his wife, to keep “date nights”? OTOH, Friday is the Muslim “Sabbath” or call to worship day. Kind of makes you want to say, “UHMMMMMMMMM”!

So in NY 1st is what all other states call 1st with special circumstances - they are still not going to give this jerk the needle so why do they bother?
