SOUTHWEST FLORIDA - A woman making national headlines after a tearful moment with President Obama has a new home.
Thursday morning, Chene Thompson handed Henrietta Hughes the keys to her home in Hendry County. Thompson is the wife of State Representative Nick Thompson. Hughes and her son will live at the home rent free.
However, a local organization is coming forward saying Hughes isn't being honest about how much help she's had in the past.
The director of We Care Outreach Ministry, Tanya Johnson, says just last month she offered Henrietta Hughes permanent housing and a place to stay free for three months, but Hughes refused.
"We would have allowed her to stay for the first 90 days, no income. You know free," said Tanya Johnson.
We Care Outreach Ministry is a faith based organization in Fort Myers.
Johnson says she also gave Henrietta and her son Corey, money, food and offered Corey job training courses, but it was refused.
"We have extended a lot of her services to her," Johnson said.
But Henrietta Hughes says these services weren't free and the apartment in East Fort Myers came with a price tag.
Hughes says Tanya Johnson wanted $400 a month immediately.
The disability check Hughes gets is a little more than $800 a month.
Hughes owes money on a loan, has her car insurance payment, a monthly storage bill and says she couldn't afford the rent.
"We're was I going to get $400 a month to give her if I got these expenses," Hughes told WINK News.
WINK News Reporter Nick Spinetto went back to talk to Tanya Johnson and she stands by her story.
Henrietta Hughes says she's never taken advantage of the system and doesn't choose to be homeless. Like other programs she's tried to get help from, she says We Care couldn't meet her needs.
State Representative Nick Thompson and his wife Chene are standing by the Henrietta and her son, Corey. They spoke out against the allegations Henrietta is milking the system, even when confronted with the fact WINK News found out the Hughes' sold property, back in 2005. Henrietta and her son sold the land for $47,000 dollars. But Chene Thompson says that was all the money they had for several years and it's gone.
"They have nothing today. They need help today. They didn't need help in 2005. They need help today. So whether they had $47,000 or $147,000 in 2005, it doesn't matter. They don't have any money today," she said.
The Thompson's say they are sad Henrietta has to defend herself against these allegations and they will continue to help her. They also hope it doesn't deter other people from helping.
You will be in my prayers throughout the day.
It sounds like a classic case of the *undeserving poor*.
Obama was punked!! you guys found all this info out with a few internet searches, and yet Obummer’s crew didn’t bother to vet this woman before they arranged for her to get free housing because she ‘only’ made $800/month? Well, being a breast cancer survivor doesn’t incapacitate you from working; in fact, the total cure rate is very high. This woman and her son are nothing more than grifters and are exactly the type of people Obummer said he was not interested in helping. What a fool!
The country is filled with shysters and quacks who will, for a cut of the action, get you “disability” payments. The shysters openly advertise the scam in parts of Michigan.
When welfare was cut back in the 1990s, the disability scam opened for business. I know healthy people drawing $32,000 to $48,000 annually on disability scams.
I can not address her disability but living here in Southwest Ohio one of the highest goals in life for an entire class of folks is to be on disability for life at the youngest age possible.
More of us should open our homes to those in need.
Just another blood sucking welfare pimp.

This is a textbook example of the difference in faith based programs to help the needy and government welfare. It’s also why liberals are so against keep faith based programs. Government sends out a check and the recipient does with it as they please. No one ever follows up to make sure the assistance was used as intended. Faith based programs, OTOH, not only provide assistance but also have someone around to see to it the aid is used as intended.
This scam artist Hughes has been “homeless” along with her son. This guy is well over 6’ tall and looks like a linebacker. He’s an unemployed computer programmer. He can’t get a job? She can’t get a job? Just a bunch of “freeloaders”.
A monthly storage bill?
bttt!
Can I get me a rent-free apartment here?
Apologies to John F'n Kerry
More like Queen for a Day.
A loan he probably wasn't even qualified to get, but got because he was black. I'd like to know how that all went down.
“More of us should open our homes to those in need.”
The local church is where this type of charity is supposed to be handled. Sadly, almost nobody attends church any more so we taxpayers are left to foot the bill.
This bum and her son make me think of Peggy The Moocher. Does anyone know her current status? Has Hussein paid her mortgage, car payment, etc.?
I sure hope their act of charity isn’t repaid with bad will. I hope the grifters appreciate their new home, take care of it, maybe fix it up a little, and move out when they get on their feet. Oh wait...
I find Nick Thompson’s wife to be GULLIBLE!
She will curse the day she helped these people.
WHY doesn’t the son have a J.O.B.?
How long has he been without one?
I have a brother-in-law who is an unemployed truck driver and also has handyman skills. He is thriving right now by helping a lot of folks with stuff they need doing ranging from putting up fences, yardwork, carpentry work, etc. He’s not getting rich, but he is staying afloat. I think he does a lot of bartering too.
