SOUTHWEST FLORIDA - A woman making national headlines after a tearful moment with President Obama has a new home.
Thursday morning, Chene Thompson handed Henrietta Hughes the keys to her home in Hendry County. Thompson is the wife of State Representative Nick Thompson. Hughes and her son will live at the home rent free.
However, a local organization is coming forward saying Hughes isn't being honest about how much help she's had in the past.
The director of We Care Outreach Ministry, Tanya Johnson, says just last month she offered Henrietta Hughes permanent housing and a place to stay free for three months, but Hughes refused.
"We would have allowed her to stay for the first 90 days, no income. You know free," said Tanya Johnson.
We Care Outreach Ministry is a faith based organization in Fort Myers.
Johnson says she also gave Henrietta and her son Corey, money, food and offered Corey job training courses, but it was refused.
"We have extended a lot of her services to her," Johnson said.
But Henrietta Hughes says these services weren't free and the apartment in East Fort Myers came with a price tag.
Hughes says Tanya Johnson wanted $400 a month immediately.
The disability check Hughes gets is a little more than $800 a month.
Hughes owes money on a loan, has her car insurance payment, a monthly storage bill and says she couldn't afford the rent.
"We're was I going to get $400 a month to give her if I got these expenses," Hughes told WINK News.
WINK News Reporter Nick Spinetto went back to talk to Tanya Johnson and she stands by her story.
Henrietta Hughes says she's never taken advantage of the system and doesn't choose to be homeless. Like other programs she's tried to get help from, she says We Care couldn't meet her needs.
State Representative Nick Thompson and his wife Chene are standing by the Henrietta and her son, Corey. They spoke out against the allegations Henrietta is milking the system, even when confronted with the fact WINK News found out the Hughes' sold property, back in 2005. Henrietta and her son sold the land for $47,000 dollars. But Chene Thompson says that was all the money they had for several years and it's gone.
"They have nothing today. They need help today. They didn't need help in 2005. They need help today. So whether they had $47,000 or $147,000 in 2005, it doesn't matter. They don't have any money today," she said.
The Thompson's say they are sad Henrietta has to defend herself against these allegations and they will continue to help her. They also hope it doesn't deter other people from helping.
..or was this all "staged for stimulus".
The Urban Dictionary states: "God complexes" are particularly common in arrogant, highly educated, worldly, or powerful people.
I wonder why she is on Disability
I see the media finds them self incapable of mentioning that Nick Thompson is a Republican.
That would probably set their other efforts back.
Is laziness a disability? How about whining? Maybe that's a disability.
She was panhandling in NY in 2004:

Why would ‘We Care’ lie about this? I can’t think of any good reason for anyone, and especially a ministry to lie about this lady. The son not wanting any job training tells us about all we need to know. I think probably this whole thing was staged.
Did not know that believing in doing the right thing for another is party related. Many people have offered. I do not know their party or much care.
Not the issue.
BTTT!
You know when a democrat does a rare act of personnel charity the media wants the whole world to know about it.
I'm in remission for Leukemia (and I find out tomorrow if I'm still in remission), our house was burglarized last month and we probably lost about $10,000 over what the insurance policy reimbursed us, my wife is being laid off the end of the month and we've probably lost about $400,000 in home equity and 401-K losses.
So what do we do? Buck it up and deal with it all and thank God we have what we have. You make choices in life, do what you have to do and love and appreciate your family and friends.
YOU DON'T COMPLAIN TO SOME GOVERNMENT IDIOT WHOSE ONLY PURPOSE IN LIFE IS RUINING THE COUNTRY YOU LOVE AND BASKING IN THE LIGHT OF SYCOPHANTS WHO THINK THEY ARE OWED A LIVING.
Obama should make up a new Cabinet position, The Department of Whining. I'm sure Congress would give him a unanimous vote.
She had a GM Union Pension and wouldn't accept any money from her Millionaire son because she thought the Gubmint should pay her expenses.
And to think my Blind Aunt worked in a factory in Brooklyn sewing clothes to make a living. Liberals make me sick.
> Odd to be panhandling in ‘04, and in ‘05 sell property for $47,000 dollars. Does that make sense to you?
Yup, it makes a hang of alot of sense to me. Panhandlers can make alot of cash-money, tax-free, every day. One of our locals makes between $50 and $100 per hour, eight hours a day, by doing nothing more ambitious than sitting near the train station with his hat on the pavement. And he can rort the rest of the system, too — soup kitchens &tc — so his expenses are about nil.
> I do not begrudge anyone a roof over their head..just there was help which was turned down, when we were led to believe she was on a long waiting list with no place to go but the safety of her car/truck.
A car/truck seems pretty cramped quarters: that wouldn’t be my first choice.
If I were homeless I would live under a bridge, like the homeless do here in NZ. They are very dry and sheltered from most of the wind: with a bit of creativity you can have a fireplace and a dry stretch of ground to roll out your sleeping bag or blankets. Get two or three of your mates to also live under the bridge (plenty of room) and nobody will ever bother you — not even the cops.
Kneel before your gawd, citizen beggar!
(big grin!) Thankyou!
I think it's because of cancer.
NOW this is what I heard about her. Brian Craig on the Steve Kane Show did research on her over the internet. She's done MULTIPLE TV appearances over her plight. They can be found on the internet. Well, Brian dug into the public records and found that she had clearly satisfied a loan on her house. She had it paid off. What happened next is an attempt to put the pieces together.
Her son had lost his job a number of years ago. He got by taking out student loans and then living off the money. When that ran dry he talked to his mom about getting further public assistance. It turns out at the highest tiers she could not own her own home. So she signed a quit-claim deed and turned it over to her son, and started to receive higher public subsidies.
But then her son, having the house in his name, decided to take out a loan on the house and live off it. No job. Predictably, the house was forclosed and they were evicted. So several public appearances later, they show up at an Obama town hall meeting...
PING to PJ-Comix...
Sir, I commend your fighting spirit in the face of undeserved hardships. I will pray for your good health. God Bless You! - A fellow conservative!
