I think Washington was the greatest president, he could have been a king or emporer and turned it down. He organized what basically was militia into a military that defeated the best military in the world.

He started from scratch as President, didn't have anyone to learn from and was one of the founders in drafting the Declaration and organizing a government under the constitution.

He then served 2 terms and left setting the example that noone should violated until 1940 with FDR.

I am surprised America survived Lincoln. (audio links on my profile page.) I hope America survives Barry Soetoro.

I agree that overall, Washington was the greatest. The greatest in modern times was Ronald Reagan, hands down.

Abraham Lincoln as the first Republican President ended slavery and saved the Union. He was the father of the American nation. Before 1860, most people saw themselves first as citizens of their state and only then as Americans. After 1865, it was clear there was only one nationality: American. The Civil War settled the identity of the country.

Is Abraham Lincoln a Great President or the Greatest President?

Why is Stephen Colbert writing this website's poll questions?

Harry S. Truman used technology to it’s very limit of destructive deterrence. He faced the hardest decision any president ever had to make and chose the right path. He had brass gonads. Obama would puss out on something that detrimental. Harry’s the man!

Washington was the greatest, but Lincoln and Reagan are not far behind. Lincoln’s greatness and contributions are hard to see for those whose vision is distorted by regional feelings, but the Confederate-secessionist movement represented a political and moral evil of such proportions that it threatened national existence. It was no honest expression of a legitimate popular discontent that Lincoln faced, but a brazen political power grab that would have thrown our nation into permanent anarchy and European domination. Lincoln’s extermination of this danger with doing as little damage as possible to the rule of law should earn the gratitude of all unbiased conservative Americans. In what he did for the nation, he truly was a second Washington.

He organized what basically was militia into a military that defeated the best military in the world.

? The British forces during the Revolutionary War were conscripts. Raw conscripts.

The British unit that came over for the War of 1812 (when the US invaded Canada) - they were much better: many were veterans of the Peninsular War.

But the redcoats who fought Washington were raw - Britain had no kind of military force until Sir John Moore's reforms kicked in, which was in the first decade of the 19th Century.

Unless Washington spent his time fighting Frederick the Great and his Prussians, he did not defeat "the best military in the world".

I'd by far rather have Washington running things than Lincoln. Slavery needed to die, absolutely. States needed to be invaded and burned to ashes? - a bad precedent to set especially considering recent elections...

Bingo! Remember too in camp at Valley Forge when his officers wanted to revolt and march on Congress, he reprimanded them like a father such that he reduced them to tears

George Washington is the greatest president by miles and miles. He saved the republic and then set it on the correct course. Tyrants like KKK Woodrow Wilson and the fascist FDR soiled the office and set the stage for the current dirtbag Hussein.

I take second place to nobody in my respect and admiration of Abraham Lincoln. But I’ll also be the first to state that Lincoln takes second place to George Washington. Washington invented the office of the President, and without him as number one then I doubt we would ever have been around long enough for number 16.
