House Expected to Vote on $789B Stimulus Package Friday (the 13th)

The House of Representatives is pushing off a vote on the final version of the economic recovery package until Friday, sources say, as lawmakers put the finishing touches on a bill President Obama hopes will jump-start the economy and create millions of jobs.

Senate and House negotiators reached a compromise bill estimated to cost $789 billion Wednesday. They trimmed billions from previous versions of the measure and settled on a package that contains 35 percent tax cuts and hundreds of billions in spending for infrastructure, education, health care, unemployment aid and other assistance.

Obama, who has campaigned energetically for the legislation, welcomed the agreement, saying it would "save or create more than 3.5 million jobs and get our economy back on track."

After settling differences between conflicting versions of the bill in conference committee, multiple House Democratic sources said the full House would vote on the legislation Friday despite some talk that it could come to the floor Thursday. The Senate would then vote after that.

But House and Senate lawmakers were mending fences, it seemed, after what appeared to be a communication lapse between the majority leadership in both chambers.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was noticeably absent from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's press conference Wednesday afternoon with other Senate negotiators announcing the stimulus deal.

Actually, I consider Friday the 13th to be my lucky day.

It's the day I quit smoking 19 years ago.

"Porkulus Maximus"... perfect name for it, Zakeet!

C'mon, FReepers... there's still plenty of time to contact your Senators and Congress Critters to stop this thing!

And don't forget to drop a friendly line to Senators Specter, Collins and Snowe while you're at it... "thanking" them for last Tuesday's Senate vote on Porkulus Maximus.

Contact Sen. Arlen Specter

Contact Sen. Susan Collins

Contact Sen. Olympia Snowe

I truly hope that the republicans in the House once again stand as one and oppose this bill. The 3 in the Senate will vote for it but that won’t make it bipartisan and this tar baby must be hung around the necks of the democrats. There isn’t anything our leadership can do, they are at a gun fight without even a knife.

“The 3 in the Senate will vote for it but that won’t make it bipartisan and this tar baby must be hung around the necks of the democrats.”

Exactly right. A real example of bipartisan is the Iraq war vote by both sides overwhelmingly passing it in both house and senate.
