There are a lot of good threads about this topic (see below) and I wouldn't want to step on their great comments, but this is not just about seniors. This is about every person of any age with a life threatening illness. If you are a thirty year old woman and you develop a non-chemo sensitive tumor and have the genes that predispose you to breast cancer your life expectancy with treatment is only about 30% over 5 years. YOU WOULDNT QUALIFY FOR TREATMENT BECAUSE OF THE COST VS LIFE EXPECTANCY RATIO THE BOARD WILL USE. And who is going to set that ratio? Is congress going to meddle in like they are meddling in every other aspect of our life? Will they have the power to raise or lower it? THIS IS ABOUT EVERYONE OF US NOT JUST SENIORS!! IT IS FOR ANY TREATMENT AT ANY AGE! Do not ignore the potential for the government to reach into our health care decisions for ourselves and...our...children.THIS IS NOT JUST ABOUT SENIORS

I’ve been thinking about the threat to disabled children. They’re “useless feeders” too.
That is scary.
EXACTLY.....anyone who isn’t a cost/benefit probably won’t have a prayer....welcome to Nazi Germany
You know, the greatness of a society is how they treat their weakest members. We very quickly becoming not so great. :(
Americans should have a strong appreciation for this. These kinds of formulas are common in national systems and are now creeping into Medicare. This thrusts them into the US system overall, big time, nearly overnight.
Soon, life and death decisions will be common in our system, and the cost will be high for American families wanting to preserve the lives of loved ones or themselves.
Dude, where’s the ‘keep your laws off my body’ chicks, now?
You are so right. One of the goals of this board is to evaluate cost / benefit values of treatment and technology and order the cheaper treatment if it is almost as good as the newer, more expensive treatment or equipment. In other words, no improved x-ray machines, or heart monitors, or pace makers. No new joint replacement devices, the old is good enough.
That’s the key, good enough. Aim for mediocrity, it’s only fair.
Wonder how long until we face forced abortion of babies deemed unworthy?
Every kid with cancer, the disabled, all cardiovascular, liver, neurological, pancreatic diseases, to name just a few will be part of this ratio evaluation process
The reality, however, is that people ought to be making the same calculations with their OWN money. What’s objectionable is having the government take everybody’s money in taxes, and then make these calculations and act on them, without the individual in question getting the benefit of being able to pass on money that she decides not to spend on herself due to poor cost/benefit outlook.
Isn’t it funny that the pro-abortion people (Obama, Reid, Pelosi, Daschle) who support this nonsense will spew the following rhetoric when supporting abortion and FOCA:
“FOCA is about making sure that women have control over their own bodies by stopping undue governmental interference with what is quite possibly the most personal decision a woman could ever have to make.”
What about a person’s right to choose to live? Keep the government out of health care decisions!
Remember the flap in Britain over macular degeneration. Thier standard called for treatment after the vision in one eye was gone.
You had to lose an eye to get treatment!! The Brits caused a stink and they backed down.
Are we ready to do that about every decision?
ANd will there be an option to pay yourself? I suspect not,,that would be unfair as the “rich” would get better care.
Already, in my treatment for cancer this is intruding. For instance Pro Crit is given for low hemoglobin ,,anemia caused by chemo. The “standards” allow it when your hemoglobin is below 10,,I at 10.1 am short of breath, cant walk very far, am tired but no, I cannot get procrit. It is too expensive. So I am less on the “performance scale” which can determine what trials of drugs you can get if you fail “recommended” chemo.
ANd no experimental treatment? What does that mean? No clinical trials” How will we have progress. ANd clinical trials are where cancer pts go when treatment fails. It is their only hope.
I heard a local lib talker give the best lib reasons for taxing the rich. They want the rich to have two choices for their money....to give it to the gov’t in taxes or to plow it into their business. In Obama’s world that means those who can afford care outside a system like this won’t be able to. We won’t have a two tier system because the rich won’t be rich anymore and they won’t have the option of spending their own money on additional care.
I once had a girlfriend who was born with a serious heart defect in 1969. Her life expectancy at birth was measured in weeks or months at birth. If it weren’t for a doctor taking a risk and performing one of the earliest open heart surgeries, she wouldn’t have survived long enough for me to meet her at 19. As it was her life expectancy was still only about 20 years. She passed away 1 day before her 31st birthday.
Another issue at stake is medical advancement. Necessity is the mother of invention. Remove the necessity and there will be no more invention.
So much for progressives and their progress.
The Congressional elite and their families (who do not pay taxes) will continue to get special treatment
such as, when THEY are sick, pulling dozens of Drs. from several Tumor Boards
all along the entire coast (eg. Kennedy) robbing the meagre Healthcare which would have been for the oxygen-wasting proles.
Ordinary, taxpaying American citizens will now wait, and after months to years, receive some rationed Healthcare
by age, religion, and diagnosis, so that each and every criminal illegal can get free health care and IVF.
Don’t forget that Federal Employees and politicians are covered under a special health care plan. We need to demand the end to special treatment for federal employees and politicians.
EXACTLY...I’ve lived in Canada....talked to Canadians....read the Canadian news.....”special” people get better care in Canada....by “special” I mean ELECTED, CONNECTED, etc....
Doesn’t Teddy K have a “hopeless diagnosis”? Stop treatment NOW Teddy, lead by example. sarc/
