Obama says GOP can't criticize stimulus
Associated Press ^ | February 10, 2009 | Charles Babington

Posted on 02/10/2009 3:46:11 AM PST by Zakeet

President Barack Obama looked comfortable enough at his first White House news conference, but he sounded like a man fed up with one thing: Republicans lecturing him about his $820 billion economic stimulus plan.

Obama repeatedly reminded a national television audience that federal spending and deficits soared under George W. Bush's presidency. He used the point to undermine GOP lawmakers opposing his plan and calling it too costly and wasteful.

"It's a little hard for me to take criticism from folks about this recovery package after they've presided over a doubling of the national debt," Obama said. "I'm not sure they have a lot of credibility when it comes to fiscal responsibility."

"What I won't do," he said at another point, "is return to the failed theories of the last eight years that got us into this fix in the first place."

An East Room, prime-time news conference is a powerful weapon, and the new president used it to enumerate the ways he differs from his predecessor.

Bush and his Republican allies in Congress relied too heavily on tax cuts, "especially tax cuts that are targeted to the wealthiest few Americans," Obama said, using past decisions to hit current critics who want more tax reductions and less spending in the stimulus plan. "We have tried that strategy time and time again, and it's only helped lead us to the crisis we face right now," he said.

On foreign policy, Obama also stressed his departures from Bush's ways.

"We do not torture" and "we abide by the Geneva Conventions," he said, alluding to the Bush administration's controversial interrogation policies.

Sorry there Mr. President, but at some point, you just have to say “No More!”

The republicans in congress had been spending in a way that put the term “drunken sailors” to shame. That’s a big part of the reason that they’re no longer in office.

Just because THEY were spending like stoned democrats doesn’t mean that we have to continue to allow it!

Mark

“”It’s a little hard for me to take criticism from folks about this recovery package after they’ve presided over a doubling of the national debt,””

Well, on this, I admit, he’s got a point when applied generally. When applied to conservatives though, he’s gonna get the criticism, because everyone knows there was little conservative about whats-his-name.

Oh yes, I'm sure we all remember Obama and the Democrats protesting against federal spending.

"We do not torture"

Right, thanks to zero we now outsource to other countries that genuinely know how to torture.

....relied ..... on tax cuts, "especially tax cuts that are targeted to the wealthiest few Americans," Obama said,

I can reuse talking points from ten years ago, as well. Recalling how Daschle said that a tax cut would only bring me enough to buy a new muffler, but not a new car, "I want to keep my muffler!"

"We have tried that strategy time and time again......

That strategy worked both times it was tried.

O’Reilly made the point—not strongly enough in my opinion—that the Bush tax cuts are what got us out of the crisis after 9/11 and for 6 years the economy was strong.

It was in 2006, when the democrats manipulation of the banks lending practices to loan to unqualified applicants ( to ensure dems a dependent voter bloc) began to implode when the s*** began to hit the fan.

So now Obama conviently skips over the first 6 years and then attributes the economic meltdown to Bush’s tax cuts with no mention of the true factor.

The dishonesty of this man and the silent endorsement of the media (by not calling him on it) is revolting.

He offends every molecule of my body.

Let me see if I have this right: The Republicans spent wildly so we get to spend wildly too and, by the way, we will not return to the failed policies of the last eight years.

Maybe its that nostalgic yearning for things logical, but that, Mr. President, makes no sense.

We are supposed to be a Representative Republic. If you use the left’s terms we are a Democracy. What part of “represent” do they not understand?

Constituents are flooding their representatives many hundreds to one against the stimulus bill. This is being ignored for the most part by the media. I suppose it is not newsworthy as they must support their king they have chosen for us.

He forgets that Bush was fighting a war. It’s not cheap sending armies half way around the world.

So if he wants to blame someone for our spending problems, blame the 9/11 terrorists. That’s right, its Islam’s fault.
