I'm Battling Cancer. How About Some Help, Congress?
By Patrick Swayze
Sunday, February 8, 2009; Page B04
For me, fighting cancer is personal. Ever since I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2008, I've been waging an intense, often hellacious battle. It's me (with a lot of love and medical support) against my disease.
**SNIP**
Our individual battles should also be national ones. With Congress about to decide how much money to include for medical research as part of the economic stimulus package, the time has come to take my personal fight to a larger stage. My message to our senators and representatives is simple: Vote for the maximum funding to let the National Institutes of Health fight cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. It's not only good for our nation's health; it's also good for our economic well-being.
**SNIP**
This money will help every region of America, as well as the individual Americans who will be diagnosed with cancer across the land. Congress should be aggressive and vote for the $10 billion.
**SNIP**
So here's my plea to Congress: Stand up to cancer. Stand up for people fighting serious disease. Stand up and help restore America's economy. Stand up and help build a prosperous and healthy future for our people by giving the NIH $10 billion for research. Stand up to create jobs, fight illness and deliver hope.

US has much cancer survival rates than the UK, with their “universal health care”.
Yes, and the money is never spent for what’s it’s suppose to go for; if Congress has their way.
That’s been proven time and time again.
I’ve never had much respect for “heroes” who only start leading the charge for cures when they get the disease themselves.
He should get Mike Mooore to get him to Cuba. Quick!!
What? Didn’t he pay his insurance premiums?
Sorry Pat, pancreatic cancer doesn’t have the PC cache for the federal bucks that breast cancer or AIDS have.
The federal government’s priority is funding research on AIDS in order to make sodomy and “alternative lifestyles” safer.
I would like to know how much money the federal government has spent in the war on cancer over the years. It’s not like they aren’t already “helping.”
Well, now that Ruth Buzzi Ginsberg has it, maybe it will climb on the charts.
Like Christopher Reeve?
Patrick-
I’m so sorry about your cancer.
That said, you have made more in a year than I’ll make in a lifetime. Pay for your own medical cost and stop sucking on the teat of the government.
As a cancer survivor, I am virtually certain that I would not have survived in Canada or the UK. The survival numbers there were near zero. I am certain that the time from diagnosis to surgery..in my case 2 weeks..might have sealed my fate. The unavailability of the dianostic equipment and the difficulty in contacting specialists is another problem. In the end, I was able to choose my surgeon and facility..and choose the most experienced man out there.
I thank God and freedom for my survival. The prayer certainly helped.
I’m assuming that Swayze managed to squirrel a few bucks away somewhere. I suggest he use it to get the best care his own money can buy.
Sorry, but for AlGore, we have to fight global warming first.
I don't have anything against these people getting well or calling for help for the sick. My problem is when they're praised as heroes when they only stand up for the sick when they get sick themselves. How is that heroic?
I recently lost 3 loved ones to Cancer, not to mention my dog.
Where was Patrick then?
Shit happens Swayze. Take a number if you want my sympathy.
Huh?
This guy is rich. He can go anywhere he wants.
I am always amused and at the same time frustrated when rich liberals complain about America.
They are considered part of the elite privileged class in those countries which certainly doesn’t make them experts about the plight of the common man.
Pancreatic cancer is probably the nastiest kind. I feel sorry for anyone who gets it, yes even Justice Ginsburg. Truth is, Swayze, you’re a dead man typing.
You could, of course, be seeking donations from the private sector, who have far and away given more money to research and treatment than the public sector but, alas, the more money the government hog sucks out of the economy, the less philathropic the private sector will be.
No matter what, it’s going to be too late for you. Praying for a miracle would be more useful than lobbying Washington.
From what I’ve read, heard and seen in interviews with this man, he is not the typical Hollywood leftist. He deserves better than some of the comments on this thread.
