WASHINGTON (Feb. 5) - Labor Secretary nominee Hilda Solis became the latest Cabinet nominee to face questions about unpaid taxes Thursday as a Senate panel abruptly postponed a scheduled vote on her confirmation. The postponement came after revelations that Solis' husband settled tax liens on his California auto repair business this week that had been outstanding for as long as 16 years.

Isn’t it incredible? I tried to find out something about this guy when Solis was nominated. She is big on labor and immigration. It was almost like he did not exist. All I could find out was that he had this auto repair business, and that if she were confirmed he was going to stay in Calif, but he would go to Washington DC to help her find a place to live. They have no children. I wonder what his nationality is, and if he is here legally. Other than that, I could not find any meeting he attended or anything. In her campaign brochures she was as vague about him as possible. Seemed strange. Seems they are all a bunch of crooks.
Solis husband, Sam Sayyad
Considering that California is a community property state, in what way are these ‘her husband’s tax problems’, and not ‘her tax problems’? We aren’t seriously saying that she’s the ‘little woman who didn’t know what her husband was doing’, are we?
Los Angeles County tax records, says that Sam Sayyad owed $7,630 on 15 tax liens on his auto repair business. Two liens, worth $981, were released in 1999 after Sayyad paid them off.

now, I’m going to seriously guess here, but, I’d guess the back taxes are State Board of Equalization now $400/yr excise tax. Even if you claim no profits, you still pay the $400/yr. If you do claim profits, you pay tax on that profit instead. I’d tieny-tiny guess, he reported no profit on his business, so is being levied the minimum $400 (probably a little less in the 90’s). This bears out with a story that Sam Sayyad owed $7630 on 15 tax liens on his auto repair business, and two liens, worth $981, were paid in 1999 (when solis was first running for senate) and I’d also tieny-tiny guess, his wife, participated in the business before she became a state politician.

here’s what Gibbs said about Solis-Sayyed:
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Solis should not be held accountable for her husband’s business. “Her husband had an issue,” Gibbs said of Solis, a California Democrat. “She’s not a partner in that business. We’re not going to penalize her for her husband’s business mistakes.”

according to the USA Today article, Sayyed also owes for Fire Dept liens for county fees, as well as state sales tax liens, over and above state business tax liens.
Yeah I wonder if they typed that with a straight face.
It’s not that the thug picked a 5th tax cheat in his quest to turn the country into Chicago.
It’s just her husband has some problems but they’ll be straightened out and we can confirm her and never mention it again.
Think if there were an (R) involved they’d have “fraud”, “dodged”, “misled”, etc in every sentence?
Hasn't EVERYONE wondered WHY Democrats ALWAYS want to RAISE TAXES??? It's because THEY DON'T PAY THEIR TAXES!!
The big story is that it is so acceptable for the ruling class to evade taxes that the Obama team thought it wouldn’t be an issue that would call an appointment into question. I guess it is so commonplace for the elite to break the law that it has become a non-issue among fellow Democrats..
They file jointly. Case closed, She is guilty. She signed the tax returns. I doubt if the press will realize the signifance of this.
They realize it.
I looked into Solis right after she was nominated, so my memory on particulars is not real good, but I recall thinking that the guy had no income. There were some forms that she had filled out concerning income and it required she show all income. All that was on it was her stuff, but it seemed that if he had anything it should have been on the form, but it wasn’t. Your idea about those taxes is probably right on. I wonder if there is a way to tell if a building is rented out. I did find where his auto repair shop was at and I looked at on street view on google and it does appear to be an auto repair shop. It has the double doors anyway:)
maybe it’s just me, but if someone was making no profit on a business in the L.A. area for 16 years, I’d wonder how they kept the doors open...I did read that Solis met Sayyed in Washington DC while an intern. Not sure how one gets from Washington DC to El Monte, CA, unless he followed her home or was an intern or something himself.
