President Obama Likely to Order Military Commission Charges Dropped Against Terrorist Suspect
ABC Political Punch ^ | February 05, 2009 | Jake Tapper

Posted on 02/05/2009 3:24:14 PM PST by Smokeyblue

ABC News has learned that on Friday, President Obama will likely order the Department of Defense's Military Commission to withdraw charges against terrorist suspect Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri. The charges may later be reinstated in a military commission or pursued in a civilian court. Al-Nashiri will remain in custody.

The announcement will not be made until after President Obama meets with the families of victims of terrorist attacks on 9/11 and on the U.S.S. Cole, where he will assure them that this step is not being done to be lenient towards al-Nashiri. The move is being done to stop the continued prosecution of al-Nashiri in a court system that his administration may ultimately find illegitimate, not for any other reason, sources told ABC News.

President Obama has expressed concern about whether the military commissions set up by the Bush administration are the proper way to go forward in pursuing charges against the U.S. detainees, and on January 22 he asked all the judges supervising the trials of detainees for a continuance of 120 days, so a team of administration officials could review the best way forward.

In almost the cases, that continuance request was granted. But last week the judge supervising the al-Nashiri trial -- Army Col. James L. Pohl, the chief judge at the Guantanamo Bay war crimes court -- said he would not heed President Obama's request for a 120-day continuance, or delay, in prosecutions of terrorism suspects. Pohl called the president's request "not reasonable" and not "in the interests of justice."

The arraignment of al-Nashiri is scheduled for Monday, February 9.

I have a question, not rhetorical...if we have the evidence that he is guilty of these things, why do we not try him and execute him? Are we protecting sources and methods of gathering information? Is there no other country with criminal charges against this individual that we could send them to now that Obama has signed and executive order continuing the practice of renditions?

So you think that you,and most of the sane americans, will be able to wait ONE YEAR with that kind of scum in the WH?

Tyrany is NEVER legitimate ie “legal”!(according to Thomas from Aquina it is morally justified to stop and remove a dangerous nasty tyran ...)
After the last fake ,bought, “elections” it could become quickly appropriate to impeach the Chicago mistake

Joined al-Qaeda

Finally, probably in 1998, al-Nashiri joined al-Qaeda, reporting directly to bin Laden. In late 1998, he conceived of a plot to attack a U.S. vessel using a boat full of explosives. Bin Laden personally approved of the plan, and provided money for it. First, al-Nashiri attempted to attack the USS The Sullivans as a part of the 2000 millennium attack plots, but the boat he used was overloaded with explosives and began to sink.[9]

The next attempt, however, the USS Cole bombing, was successful. 17 U.S. sailors were killed, and many more were injured. This success brought him fame and respect within al-Qaeda, and al-Nashiri became the chief of operations for the Arabian Peninsula.[9] He organized the Limburg tanker bombing in 2002, and he may have planned other attacks as well.

Arrest In November 2002, al-Nashiri was captured in the United Arab Emirates.[2] He is currently in American military custody in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp,[1] having previously been held at some secret location. On September 29, 2004, he was sentenced to death in absentia in a Yemeni court for his role in the USS Cole bombing.

The U.S. military put al-Rahim al-Nashiri in prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Pentagon said March 14, 2008. He was held by the CIA for an undisclosed amount of time.[10]

Another poor innocent victim of torture.

Don’t hold your breath. I don’t think zero has any grasp of what our military do or their dedication and sacrifice. I don’t think you will ever see him visiting the wounded warriors or meeting with the families of the wounded and fallen like our former REAL POTUS unless it involves a photo op or votes.

Where is his popularity falling? I have not seen any evidence of it. The same idiots that inflicted him on me stilll worship him. I have not heard or read about a single idiot that voted for him say that they were sorry that they voted for him.

As far as impeaching him goes, the House is controlled by Democrats by a large margin, and a majority vote would be necessary to substantiate the charge[s]. The Senate would have to try him and it would take a two third majority to convict him. There are enough Democrats alone in the Senate to prevent that and when you factor in the Republicans that always vote with the Democrats the odds get even slimmer.

I did not vote for him and he will never be my president. But the majority of the pepole that voted did. I do not like the way it turned out but there is nothing I can do about it. The American voters, in their infinate wisdom, ordained that he lead them. They deserve everything he does to them. As for the others, including me, when it rains it rains on the just as well as the unjust.

As for his future, next time he will win by an even bigger margin. Why? Because by then the Democrats will have enacted laws that will make everything living and most that aren’t eligible to vote Democrat.

EXCLUSIVE: Bush, Cheney comforted troops privately
Met with thousands of war injured, kin out of spotlight

Joseph Curl
Monday, December 22, 2008

For much of the past seven years, President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have waged a clandestine operation inside the White House. It has involved thousands of military personnel, private presidential letters and meetings that were kept off their public calendars or sometimes left the news media in the dark.

Their mission: to comfort the families of soldiers who died fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and to lift the spirits of those wounded in the service of their country.

On Monday, the president is set to make a more common public trip - with reporters in tow - to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, home to many of the wounded and a symbol of controversy earlier in his presidency over the quality of care the veterans were receiving.

But the size and scope of Mr. Bush’s and Mr. Cheney’s private endeavors to meet with wounded soliders and families of the fallen far exceed anything that has been witnessed publicly, according to interviews with more than a dozen officials familiar with the effort.

“People say, ‘Why would you do that?’” the president said in an Oval Office interview with The Washington Times on Friday. “And the answer is: This is my duty. The president is commander in chief, but the president is often comforter in chief, as well. It is my duty to be - to try to comfort as best as I humanly can a loved one who is in anguish.”

Mr. Bush, for instance, has sent personal letters to the families of every one of the more than 4,000 troops who have died in the two wars, an enormous personal effort that consumed hours of his time and escaped public notice. The task, along with meeting family members of troops killed in action, has been so wrenching - balancing the anger, grief and pride of families coping with the loss symbolized by a flag-draped coffin - that the president often leaned on his wife, Laura, for emotional support.

“I lean on the Almighty and Laura,” Mr. Bush said in the interview. “She has been very reassuring, very calming.”

Mr. Bush also has met privately with more than 500 families of troops killed in action and with more than 950 wounded veterans, according to White House spokesman Carlton Carroll. Many of those meetings were outside the presence of the news media at the White House or at private sessions during official travel stops, officials said. . . .

Where is his popularity falling? I have not seen any evidence of it.

You should read more. Americans, including those who voted for him, are strongly opposing Porkzilla the more they learn about it. The number of people opposed to it are rising sharply as those who favor it are falling.

As for his future, next time he will win by an even bigger margin.

Trust me when I tell you that there won't be a "next time". He's on schedule to be a worse one-term president than Jimmuh Cahter.

I’m betting this fool is thinking “if Bush can pardon 2 border guards for shooting a man in the a##, then I should be able to drop charges about a Muslim in the wrong place at the wrong time... carrying guns and explosives battling our troops.”

The GOP needs to start running ads that show the USS Cole and 0bama dropping charges against the mastermind of the bombing. The public has a short memory, so this needs to be driven home!

end quote
....

that is the problem.
the GOP have had plenty of times to let the public know about phony and yet they still do not make many of these decisions public enough.

For some reason the GOP think that the media will report this as major news and they will not.

Remember Mccain who kept saying well have a look at his record etc.

Get AD’s out about this and then the public will start to become aware of what is going on

His first phone call was not to any ally, not to the UN Secretary General, not to Putin... no, it was to Palestinian president Abbas. His first interview was not with CBC, NBC, ABC or CNN (and certainly not Fox), it was with Al Arabiya.

And here, once again, Obama is putting Arabs first.

EXACTLY
not to mention in the first two days of him saying how homo’s should be open in the military, Gitmo closes and those terrorists get to come to the states.

I don’t think in our history has a new president made his first call to an enemy, it is usually to our best ally of Great Britain, Canada and many a time mexico because they share a border.

What a slap in the face to the British, Aussies etc who have given their lives to help us in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Even a blind obama cultists can surely see that he was primed for this job as our enemy like Ayers know violence was never going to win but taking over and getting on the inside could ruin us.

It might sound far fetched but I believe that he is out to destroy us, he is trying to weaken us and he was primed to fool the American people so he could get into the white house

remember he would’;t even salute the flag, now put all that together I see no other explanation that phony is trying to ruin us from within.

I look at the voters who voted for him the same as phony.
They are enemies of this country who voted based on ignorance, based on his not so whiteness or just pure hatred of this country, either way they are the enemy and I hold nothing but contempt for them.

They got us into this mess along with those who stayed at home because they were too lazy
