WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate has killed an alternative economic stimulus plan by Sen. John McCain that would have cut income and payroll taxes but spent far less than President Obama's plan.
The party-line 57-40 vote against McCain's $421 billion plan came Thursday as a group of moderate Democrats and Republicans struggled to cut up to $100 billion from Obama's version.

The right thing? The RIGHT Thing? The trillion dollar Porkulus needs to be reduced by trillion and a half before it even starts to approach the "right thing".
$100B one way or the other is chump change. All this imaginary money coming off the printing presses will do is further endanger us, drive us further in debt, and further guarantee runaway inflation sometime in the near future.
The "right thing", my a$$.
$421 BILLION isn’t enough! Maybe the gang of 14 will vote no this time around.
A HUNDRED BILLION??? OUT OF OVER NINE HUNDRED BILLION???
What the hell is the point of that? If you won't stand for $900 billion worth of bad ideas, why in heaven's name would anybody support $800 billion worth of bad ideas?
No, It has already passed the house, where not one republican voted for it, and even a handful of rats voted against it
McCain is good at getting shot down.
Gotta fight it one issue at a time.
Pick and attack the worst. Lather, rinse, repeat.
McCain augers in another one ...
If he had opposed the bailout back in October, he would have won the election. But he's a dope.
Act II, Scene III. This is all leading into a Sunday talking head show finale and watching the usual suspects slap each other on the back for their bi-partisanship heroics.
No. Tell the people the TRUTH. Then step back and let the Democrats own it if they will (which they won't). This sort of half-a$$ed compromising is precisely what lends cover to those who would cave in for "pragmatism" and "bipartisanship", when in reality, it is the death knell of our Republic.
McCain's position on the bailout did exactly the same thing- offering cover for those who would cave, instead of standing with the House Republicans, who_were_right.
What purpose is there for the "opposition" if it is not to oppose the tyranny of the ruling party, especially when it is so blatantly wrong in it's direction?
His amendment needs to cut up to 1 trillion from the porkulus bill.
Unfortunately, the truth does not fit into bite-sized chunks.
Anyway, have you seen this video of Lindsey Graham attacking the stimulus ?

Screw the ‘Rats and their calls for Republican support of Porkulus. These idiots richly deserve to twist in the wind.
So support the lie? How absurd.
Anyway, have you seen this video of Lindsey Graham attacking the stimulus ?
So what? He stands at his master's beck and call, and McCain's bill begins with the very same false premise that the government can stimulate the economy by printing more money, or establishing more debt.
You accept that as the "right thing", somehow. I see it as the same damnable lie the Democrats are claiming, and exactly the same things that Bush did.
The argument shifts to how much, and where to spend it, rather than where it belongs, which is that it should not be spent at all. In fact, massive reductions in taxes and regulations should be enacted on a scale never before seen. That is what would help stimulate this economy, and it is the only thing that would help.
Anything else the Republicans sign onto is bound to fail, and they will own it, right along with their Democrat counterparts. And in doing so, they provide no clear difference in ideology for the people to decide between. Just two levels of the same twisted thinking.
I see that “reaching across the isle” bidness is working out just fine for the retarded “maverick”...
Well said...the most succinct explanation of the problem with Gov't meddling in the markets I have seen.
“Theyre finally doing the right thing”
Talk about moral relativism.
“Pick and attack the worst. Lather, rinse, repeat.”
Absolute nonsensical BS.
