The director of the Census Bureau will report directly to the White House and not the secretary of Commerce, according to a senior White House official.
The decision came after black and Hispanic leaders raised questions about Commerce Secretary nominee Judd Gregg s commitment to funding the census.
Gregg, New Hampshires senior senator, voted in committee and on the floor for a 1995 Republican budget that envisioned the elimination of the Commerce Department. Of even more concern to black and Hispanic leaders, Gregg battled President Clinton over a request for emergency funding for the 2000 census.
Secretary of Commerce-designate Judd Gregg s record raises serious questions about his willingness to ensure that the 2010 census produces the most accurate possible count of the nations population, the National Association of Latino Elected Officials said in a release on Tuesday, the day Gregg was named to the post. Policymakers and planners at all levels of government rely on these data to make important decisions about their services, such as the number of teachers that will be needed in their classrooms, the best places to build new roads, or the best way to provide job training.
The selection of the Republican Gregg for Commerce a plum often given out to a big fundraiser or personal friend in the presidents own party left many Democrats scratching their heads and others fearful that Gregg might not defend favored agencies and programs with the department.
Sen. Greggs record of previously voting to abolish the Commerce Department and his attempts to block President Bill Clintons efforts to secure adequate funding for the 2000 census raise troubling concerns regarding his commitment to the departments core missions, Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Barbara Lee said on Tuesday.

This isn't the form from the last census; the ADCS is different. You are supposedly required to fill out the whole thing and it is NOT anonymous.
I really don’t care, the constitution doesn’t allow them to intrude in out lives like that and I will always refuse to co-operate. Last census I only put down how many people and that was it. As for the other thing, I will take the fine before I answer intrusive questions about my private life and most likely I will sue and try to get this sh** done away with! We need conservatives with big bucks to start standing their ground and fighting this kind of crap in court!
Somehow we think that the attempts at fabrication are not going to go as easily as the One would like.
Twenty bucks says Zero will engage ACORN to run the census.
We have refused several times. They're still after us. For now.
They did that? Eep.
It’s unfortunate a rat administration will control the Census for the 2nd straight time.
People need to open their eyes and realize that America has had it’s last free election. The battle is over, and the looting and pillaging has begun.
The marxists now in control will NEVER relinquish control. ACORN is under investigation in 10 states for vote fraud and the house and senate just gave them 8 billion dollars.
Next they’ll take our guns and free speech, because that is all we have left.

Wake up, and KNOW YOUR ENEMY.
With the Dems in control of redistricting thru the White House and majority of Governorships, the 11 Dems who voted against the stimulus bill may find their usefulness to be over.
At least 4 of them are atop the 2010 GOP target list.
In 2000 we refused to answer the “race” question.
Census worker came out and we still refused.
I’m sure she filled it in for us from “observation”.
I should have told her Pacific Islander or something way out of whack with her “observation”.
1 running the weather
2 reporting the census
:)
With GW’s weather machine, of course.
